Where are we all standing on porsche 928? It’s not a car that gives me much thought, but in the case that comes to mind, the first thing that strikes me is always how weird it is. Headlights with the off position don’t point in a particular direction, but somehow look weirder in use. The windows extend behind the B-pillar. The taillights are inconveniently placed on the pre-renovation model. Sure, it has a hint of luxury, but there’s also an old-fashioned V8 under the hood — and there’s nothing more un-Porsche.

It was a strange car. That might explain why it was chosen by artists Daniel Arsham and Kyza to recreate the Y2K style. Meet nebula 928.

This one-off car, which began life as a 1978 model, is on display at South by Southwest starting today. explosive design. The metallic purple definitely brings a 2000s vibe to the whole thing and reminds me a lot of Violet Blue Metallic, delivered – appropriately enough – in 996 days. The wheels could also have been pulled straight out of a ‘90’s German tuning scene magazine.

I’ll just come out and say – I think the lights look great. They complement the flexibility of the 928 surface, the roundness that envelops the wedge silhouette. But then I will feel the same, because I also believe The pinnacle of Porsche design with fried eggsand Apple are cowards for not making every iPhone out of candy-colored translucent plastic. The illuminated “Nebula” takes up the space where the word “Porsche” is usually embossed a bit too much, but this is an art car after all.

It’s also the kind of art car that often causes skepticism in me, who is confused and admittedly angry by high fashion, how a scarcity of manufactured goods can add value to casual streetwear, and why people downsize a pair of sneakers. But Nebula 928 reproduces a ‘80s icon in another era, and that’s a great premise. It also simply looks good.
