Vatican Calls for ‘Cultural Revolution’ to Fight Climate Change

The Vatican is once again trying to make climate action an important issue for Catholics, as it launches a program called Laudato Si’ action platformnamed after the Pope 2015 letter frame environmental protection as a spiritual task. The new website urges Catholics to eat less meat, take public transport and drive less, avoid single-use plastic and other wasteful habits, and join the “cultural revolution.” to change the way they interact with the natural environment and the financial system.

“Discriminatory response to the ecological crisis is an act of profound concern,” the website says. “The Laudato Si Goals ‘guide our actions…. Their holistic approach acknowledges the planetary limitations of all socioeconomic systems and the human origins of the ecological crisis. They call for a cultural and spiritual revolution to realize the whole ecosystem”.

Pope Francis, head of the Roman Catholic Church since 2013, has made environmental awareness part of his mission to the church. (However, many U.S. bishops, did not follow his lead. Some American conservatives even called he is a “fake Christian.”) This new platform contains an emotional plea for Catholics to adopt a more sustainable lifestyle.

The site is available here.

There’s something oddly amateur about this new site, which makes me wonder if this is really an official church effort.

The new website is the “.org” page. It’s not unusual for regular websites, which often end with “.com”, “.org”, “.net” or country-specific domains, but official papal websites often ends with “.va”.

Additionally, someone with no deep knowledge of history or the English language chose to describe Pope Francis’ efforts as promoting a “cultural revolution”. In English, the phrase “cultural revolution” has some very dark connotations. Anyone with any knowledge of history has heard of Chinese Cultural Revolutiona communist who committed carnage in which millions of people starved or were executed for wearing glasses and looking smart, or even suspecting that they criticized or questioned anything Mao said or did .

I’m sure this is not what Pope Francis wants, is it?
