Polestar Adds Referral Program, But It’s Not Like Tesla’s

Polestar announced last week that it is launching its own referral program to incentivize owners to promote the brand’s electric vehicles to others.

A hugely popular customer referral program for Tesla, but times have changed, and you won’t find anything as lucrative as $1,000 deals and free cars for top referrals. that Tesla offered at one point.

Launched in the US, Europe and South Korea, the program allows both referring customers and those referred by them to earn rewards, based on the referral code in the customer account.

Existing customers can generate one of these codes in their account, which can then be linked to a new customer’s account when an order is placed. Upon purchase, new customers in Europe and Korea will receive a charge credit. US customers will receive a Google Bundle that includes the Nest Hub and Nest Mini devices.

Referred customers will also be eligible for those rewards, along with a Houdini Power Houdi jacket and a unique sketch from one of Polestar’s designers, depending on their “bonus tier.” , according to Polestar.

This marks a return to an idea that served Tesla well in its early days.

As we reported back to 2016—Before the Model 3 — Tesla’s referral program really worked in creating momentum in the market with early adopters. It gave the buyer a $1,000 discount if referred, plus $1,000 credit for the referrer. And Tesla often invites top showcasers to its events, and in some cases, gives them their first chance — or first chance to buy — new models.

However, it also created problems with some states—Like Virginia. Just as Tesla was fired from franchisees for its direct selling business model, the company also ran into trouble with its referral program for violating a Virginia law that prohibits compensation for non-grantees. car sales license.

Aside from potential regulatory hurdles, the electric vehicle market today is very different from what it was five years ago. While electric vehicles are still just a drop off in the US new car market, the concept has gained more acceptance. Even Tesla ended its referral program in 2021, excluding their solar roof.

Polestar is also a little different with its retail strategy, as it relies to some extent on parent Volvo’s existing service network but with its own service network. direct-to-consumer retail.
