PLUS to test open payment system at Penang Bridge, BKE in September – RFID lane to accept credit/debit cards

Highway franchiser PLUS Malaysia has announced that it will conduct a trial run of the open toll payment system at the Penang Bridge and the Butterworth-Kulim Expressway (BKE) in September. Bernama report.

This follows the announcement by works minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi made earlier this week that five highways will start running a open payment system toll collection in September. The five locations are Sungai Besi Expressway (Besraya), Ampang-Kuala Lumpur Overhead Expressway (AKLEH), New Pantai Expressway (NPE), Guthrie Corridor Expressway (GCE) and Penang Bridge.

Through the open toll payment system, drivers can use their credit and debit cards to pay tolls once the system is up and running. According to PLUS CEO Datuk Zakaria Ahmad Zabidi, the company will work with the Highways Authority of Malaysia (LLM) to implement the system.

“PLUS welcomes the announcement of the minister of works on the rollout of an open toll payment system, in particular allowing drivers to use debit and credit cards on some motorways, including the Bridge. Penang,” he said in a statement.

Drivers who wish to use a debit or credit card to pay tolls should be aware that they will have to use a radio frequency identification (RFID) lane to do so.

“We are currently preparing a test run of the system, where drivers can use their debit and credit cards as well as Touch ‘n Go e-Wallets at the RFID lanes on the Penang Bridge,” he said, adding furthermore that a similar test run will be carried out at the BKE toll station in Kubang Semang.
