For 2023, line AMG hybrid expands in number of models and sheer size for the Mercedes-AMG S 63 E Performance. It is not only the largest of AMG hybrid in size, based on the brand’s flagship sedan, it also has the largest and most torque the battery.
The powertrain layout is very similar to performance GT 63 SE with a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 up front making 603 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque. It is connected to a nine-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. At the rear, there’s an electric motor making 188 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque with a two-speed transmission and electronically controlled limited-slip differential. Combined output is 791 hp and 1,055 lb-ft of torque.
All of this means that the S 63 E Performance can hit 60 mph in 3.2 seconds and a top speed of 180 mph. But is a Dip into the mixture, it can do more than just go fast, it can also run without gas, at least for a short time. It has a larger version of the liquid-cooled battery pack from the GT 63 and C 63 E Performance models at 13.1 kWh. No range estimates are given, but the GT 63’s battery capacity is more than twice that, but generally Similar in size and powertrain, we expect a range of 15 to 20 miles. And the S 63 can run in all-electric mode with a top speed of 87 mph.
Of course, power isn’t the only performance upgrade. Braking has been upgraded to a 15.7-inch rotor with six-piston calipers at the front and a 15-inch rotor with a single-piston caliper at the rear. Carbon ceramic versions are optional. Additional tie rods have been added to the frame at both ends. The suspension is an active air suspension version with an electronically adjustable fork and an active anti-roll bar. The shock absorbers have been re-tuned with a larger difference between sport and comfort settings. Rear-wheel steering is also standard, as is the active engine mount, which appears to be a first for WORLD RANGE.
And in typical AMG style, there are a number of visual updates to the S 63. It features a longitudinally grooved AMG grille, a first for the S-Class. An alternate AMG badge Mercedes decorative hood star. A more aggressive lower bumper and side skirts are also fitted, along with 21-inch wheels. Inside, there are unique options for stitching, color and trim, plus an AMG sports steering wheel.
Exact times for availability and pricing are yet to be announced. But look for the S 63 that goes on sale this year and is one of the most expensive S-Class models on sale.
