Plainsman, R ranked Superstar reunites in Governors Cup
Last year, only one neck apart Plainsman and R-Rated Superstar of the Governor’s Cup Stakes $175,000, with the latter getting the best of it.
Despite the loss, Plainsman, a 7-year-old horse trained by Brad Cox and owned by Shortleaf Stable, was rated 9-5 more popular than R-Rated Superstar (4-1). They will be leaving the gates side by side, from 1st (R-Rated Superstar) and 2nd (Ordinary) in the 1/8 mile Governors Awards on August 19 at Remington Park.
After losing to R-Rated Superstars in last year’s Governors Cup, Plainsman, son of Flatter get out Street Sense mare SS Pinafore, next stop at Churchill Downs and won $300,000 Ack Ack Stakes (G3) at a mile on October 2. He has a 9-7-6 record from the 31st starting with earnings of $1,408,412.
Plainsman was purchased for $350,000 by Shortleaf at the 2016 Keeneland Sale in September 2016 from a Taylor Made Sales Agent shipment.
The R-rated Superstar is a 9-year-old dog from the stables of Federico Villafranco who runs for Remington Park’s all-time winning owner Danny Caldwell in Poteau, Okla. Oaklawn Park early last year.
Gelding has done nothing but graded deposits in his last five startups. He has an 11-10-8 record from 62 starts. His earnings are at $1,616,280.

Opening night at Remington Park
A total of 87 people took part in nine races on Friday night with an average field size of 9.6. The total for the evening was $381,925, with $175,000 of the Governor’s Cup topping the night.
A 5 1/2 sprint for $5,000-level Oklahoma mixed-race claimants, ages 3 and up, will begin the season. A group of eight will compete for the opening act on the main track.
A pair of turf races, both turns, will take place on opening night. In Friday’s race, girls 3, 4, and 5 years old will go a mile, with school 11 trying to graduate to line up with the winners. The final race in the program is an allowance event at 7 1/2 furlongs for bitches and mares, 3 years of age and older, with 12 animals entered.
Remington Park will continue with the race on Friday and Saturday through the rest of August. First race nightly is 7:07pm All time in Central.
