Pakistan plays warm-up in Sri Lanka emergency match before testing


The touring Pakistan cricket team is currently taking part in a warm-up match against the Sri Lanka Cricket XI at the Colts Cricket Club Ground in Colombo. The final day of the match is taking place amid massive protests in the country due to the escalating economic crisis. On Wednesday, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, acting President, declared a State of Emergency in the island nation as protests intensified hours after it emerged that President Gotabaya Rajapaksa had fled the country. .

Protesters occupied the office of Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe after a clash with security officers, who tried to stop them using tear gas and water cannon bullets.

Sri Lanka’s national television network, Rupavahini, briefly halted broadcasting after protesters entered the television station. The TV show resumed after that.

Earlier on the same day, President Rajapaksa landed in the Maldives. He left the country on a military plane with his wife and two bodyguards.

The Pakistan Cricket Board shared photos from day three of the match on its Twitter handle. “The final day of the warm-up match against Sri Lanka Cricket XI is taking place at the Colts Cricket Club Ground in Colombo,” PCB wrote on Twitter along with the photos.

Pakistan scored 301/9 in the first inning riding on an impressive 88 from the captain Babar Azam. SLC XI responds with a total of 375/8. Pakistan’s second half is currently underway.

There were widespread protests across the country even as the national team was playing Australia in a series of format matches, which ended in a spectacular victory for Sri Lanka, as they drew two series 1-1 .

Sri Lanka lost the T20I series but managed to cause a big disappointment by winning the ODI series against the Aussies.

Pakistan is scheduled to play 2 test matches in the island nation but with tensions rising, one will have to see if the series can go on.
