Oscar De Lay Hoya on Canelo Alvarez: “A lot of lion cubs are right behind him.” fight exaggeration at a media workout in Los Angeles to promote the Devin Haney-Ryan Garcia fight later this month, “trying to take that throne, trying to take that crown away from Canelo. It’s a matter of time. Obviously, only time will tell. You have kids who are 26, 27 years old. Canelo has been there, done that. That’s why I said, May 4th with the passing of the torch. It may be.”

For those who don’t know, May 4 is the day Canelo will fight fellow Mexican Jaime Munguia to defend his undisputed super middleweight championship. Instead, there are those who feel Canelo should face formidable opponent David Benavidez, an issue De La Hoya has questioned. After all, Canelo said he would only face Benavidez if he had a truly huge amount of money. “That’s just another way of saying I don’t want to fight him,” De La Hoya said in passing Combat Center. “That’s the bottom line. That’s basically it. I don’t want to fight him. It’s classic Boxing 101. You don’t want to fight someone, just outbid, bid yourself. “

Of course, there was a time when Canelo and De La Hoya were perhaps the most powerful duo in boxing. However, now the fighter and the promoter are on bad terms. De La Hoya explains why fight exaggeration. “One day,” De La Hoya said, “a reporter asked me, ‘Do you think Canelo needs another trainer?’, and I told the reporter that I had seven other trainers in my career mine. I learned from every coach, (every coach) taught me something new. Maybe Eddie Reynoso needs a little help. Well guess what? They (Team Canelo) called me disloyal. He (Canelo) said I was unfaithful, how could I do this? So that’s how it all started.”

However, De La Hoya clearly doesn’t buy Canelo’s loyalty argument. “I mean, come on,” he said, “who’s the disloyal one here, jumping from promoter to promoter, network to network? Who is the unfaithful person here? Who is the traitor here? And have I received a thank you? Never. When I gave him the biggest deal of his life? Will I receive a thank you? Never. So who is the disloyal person? Of course, boxers have been breaking up with their teams since at least the 1920s when heavyweight champion Jack Dempsey split with his colorful manager, Doc Kearns. Viewed objectively, Canelo-De Ha Hoya’s break ended up being one of a seemingly endless string of highly publicized professional failures.
