Chinese brands that Porsche sees as its main competitors

When Porsche calls you a competitor, you know you must be doing something right.

That is certainly the case for a number of Chinese-owned brands that the iconic German manufacturer has recently named as competitors in the electric vehicle (EV) sector for the new generation. Electric Macan.

The launch of Porsche’s first electric SUV means the company is entering a space with more Chinese competitors than any other segment in which it competes.

The photo above is from the Macan EV launch in Singapore, where Porsche’s global CEO Oliver Blume showed a slide pointing out two things: one, Porsche needs to convince more buyers of other EV brands to switch to buy the car, and two, some of the other brands are not the brands it has competed with historically.

The Macan EV doesn’t just compete with Tesla, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi; The Germans also consider Lotus to be owned by Geely (eletre and new variants), the Zeekr (X SUV) and Polestar brands are rivals.

Also considered Porsche competitors are SAIC Motor’s IM Motors brand, as well as Nio – both from China.

The Zeekr X is an interesting comparison for Porsche to mention. It’s a car that will arrive in Australia around the same time, albeit likely priced significantly lower than the German car (starting at $133,700).

Polestar has it North Star 3 And 4, which will likely be higher at a similar price to the Macan EV. However, since they use the same architecture as Zeekr (also designed in Sweden!), one has to wonder why you would pay more for the same.

If you have read our comments section of the incredible scale and diversity of brands represented at the upcoming Beijing Motor Show in Australia, you know that the future of our automotive landscape here is about to change dramatically in the next ten years.

While we have had steady brands in the market for generations, the last 10 years have seen the birth of more brands than any other period in modern history, for the most part Among them are from China.

These Chinese brands come here not only with new designs and technologies but also with great volume ambitions for our market.

Rewind 10 years to 2014 and there were only 4154 Chinese-made cars sold in Australia. Last year, 193,433 went to Australian buyers.

With more and more Chinese brands coming to Australia with lofty sales goals, that number is only set to increase.
