Odell Beckham Jr. jersey number, explained: Why can’t Rams WR wear the typical number 13 shirt

The Rams and Odell Beckham Jr had little problem negotiating a deal for Beckham to come to Los Angeles. The Browns’ former recipient signed a one-year, $4.25 million contract.

It took a few days for Beckham to officially agree to a deal with the Rams. That’s partly because he’s been weighing offers from other teams, like the Packers and Chiefs. However, there seems to be another problem going on. Beckham’s shirt number. How did that become a potential sticking point? ESPN’s Adam Schefter have the answer.

According to sources, one of the only big incidents occurred when the parties discussed the number of shirts Beckham would wear. Beckham discussed wearing the numbers 1, 3 and 13, but there are problems with each number.

It’s unlikely that this is a serious issue, but it could serve as a breakout factor if he likes another location as much as the Rams. That doesn’t seem to have happened.

Odell Beckham Jr’s jersey number. What is with Rams?

Beckham has worn the number 13 shirt throughout his career, but it belongs to Rams backup midfielder John Wolford. The NFL doesn’t allow shirt number changes mid-season, so if Beckham stays at the Rams in 2022 and wants to wear the number 13 shirt, he’ll have to ask Wolford to change it for him.

As for the other picks, the most recent No. 1 spot went to recipient DeSean Jackson, who requested and was released from the Rams following the 2021 NFL trade deadline. That could be, but it looks like it Beckham prefers to wear the number 3 shirt.

Rerun Cam Akers is intending to switch to number 3 before the 2022 season begins. However, he will be off for the season after being torn apart by Achilles in July, so that number should still be enough to claim the rest of this year. Looks like Beckham could take that number given a recent tweet from Akers.

So expect Beckham Jr to wear the number 3 shirt on his Rams debut – no matter how much attacking play he plays.

Odell Beckham Jr. how much will play in Rams vs 49ers?

Beckham may not have much time left to play with the 49ers. NBC Sports’ Peter King wrote that Beckham would play “10 to 20 snaps” in the Rams’ debut on “Monday Night Football” against San Francisco. Ben Skowronek and JJ Koski will replace the injured Robert Woods (with a torn ACL).

King also explained that Rams coach Sean McVay warned Beckham that he would only see the goal increase if he could expand his play on his own.

“When McVay recruited him, he told Beckham in advance of his chances. McVay told him he could not guarantee him X goals per game from Matthew Stafford,” King wrote, before noting McVay’s message to Beckham: “But I can tell you if you’re open, Matthew will get the ball for you.”

Beckham can also get a chance to return the punishment. That could open up more opportunities for him to earn touchdowns.
