OCTA Defender: Light-hybrid AMG G 63 rival spied

The hottest version of Defender (formerly Land Rover Defender) off-road vehicle was spotted testing at the Nurburgring racetrack ahead of its launch later this year.

The OCTA defender will compete with things like Mercedes-AMG G 63 and is arguably the toughest, most capable and most luxurious member of the Defender family.

This particular prototype is dressed in black and white camouflage although you can tell it has a wider stance, with larger wheel arches to accommodate the wider track and bigger tires.

There is also another front fairing with additional openings to allow more air to be drawn into the engine compartment.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen the upcoming Defender OCTA. The company recently teased some images of the top variant and detailed some of its features.

The Defender OCTA will be the most powerful member of the range and will be powered by a mild-hybrid twin-turbo V8 engine.

Although the brand hasn’t announced any detailed specifications so far, the twin-turbo V8 will definitely be a BMW product.

The Range Rover Sport SV has been equipped with BMW’s 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 engine, producing 467kW of power and 750Nm of torque (800Nm on acceleration) and incorporating a 48V mild-hybrid system.

BMW V8 helps Range Rover Sport SV accelerate from 0-100km/h in 3.8 seconds.

It’s slightly louder than the current range-topping Defender engine, JLR’s turbocharged 5.0-litre V8, which produces up to 386kW and 625Nm.

Defender promises the OCTA will have “outstanding all-terrain performance” thanks to its hydraulically linked 6D Dynamic air suspension setup with pitch and roll control.

The system is said to keep the vehicle nearly level during acceleration, braking and cornering on-road, while maximizing independent wheel travel and articulation off-road. .

JLR (formerly Jaguar Land Rover) recently turned Defender into its own brand to shift the company’s focus away from its two historic brands, Jaguar and Land Rover.

Instead, the British automaker is moving towards a new “House of Brands” approach, which will launch models under the Range Rover, Defender, Discovery and Jaguar brands.
