Eisaman added: “(We’ve seen) a bit more of the average market (compared to the March Sale. You can’t say the sell-off was weak at the top. It looks like March even isn’t for the first time,” Eisaman added. even stronger in the top third. It’s a pretty good market.”

As for the Spring Sale market, Lucan Bloodstock shipper Karl Keegan said: “It’s been tough. I’ve raked a lot of horses this week, and the horses are clean and x-rayed. I don’t. want to bring them up and expose them. We’re going to have to go ahead and race them.”

“It’s the absence of an intermediary market,” he added, Keegan. “That (sort of) owner would go to these sales and buy a horse, or a couple of horses for $50,000 or $75,000 and send it to a trainer that’s not here. You have a lot of it. the trainer in New York isn’t here I don’t know if it’s because of the economy and people don’t want to spend I think we overpaid for the foals a year in Kentucky last year. I feel like I’ve spent $25,000, $30,000 or more over the value of the horses.”

Tom Ventura, president of OBS, said: “In the past, sales companies and buyers were both disappointed in 2 year old sales; they usually run around 25-30%. “It’s one of those situations where the horses don’t meet the shipper’s expectations or they don’t feel alive in the market, they choose to rake them.”

Ventura added: “Some of these cyclists or partnerships have a racing component to them and they can put these horses on the track, and that’s probably what they’ll be doing. We’re glad we can keep up with last year’s high performance. The world has changed a lot since last April; a lot of things may have impacted the market but the reality is. no, that’s great to see.”
