Northwest Weather Conference 2023


Northwest Weather Conference is a great local meeting for people interested in Northwest weather and for both professionals and interested amateurs.

It will take place May 12-13, 2023 at the NOAA Sand Point campus in northwest Seattle and is sponsored by the University of Washington, the National Weather Service, and the Seattle/Portland chapters of the Meteorological Association. USA.

The meeting will be an interesting one (current agenda is This).

It begins Friday afternoon (May 12) with a session on heavy rainfall and flooding, including a detailed look at atmospheric rivers and the historic 1962 “ARK” hurricane. , we move on to a discussion on wildfires and smoke.

Friday night there will be a get-together at Ivar’s Salmon House, with a fantastic buffet and a talk by Washington State (DNR) meteorologist Mathew Dehr on the Washington wildfires.

Saturday morning (May 13) will begin with a talk by the National President of the American Meteorological Association, Brad Colman, then move on to a session on climate and weather in the Northwest. This session will include talks about extreme weather events, heat waves and our climate change.

Next up, a session will look at the extreme blizzards of February 2023 that have just been poorly forecasted and have brought Portland to its knees, followed by Shannon O’Donnell’s talk on public forecasts for Portland. UW Dawgcast.

After that, lunch will be served to the attendees, followed by an afternoon session on Northwest weather patterns, social media weather websites, etc.

Meeting attendance, cost, online vs in person

Everyone attending the meeting must Register on the site. You can attend in person or online.

If you are able to attend in person, please do so. Meeting people is half the fun. There will be snacks at recess and lunch on Saturdays. Direct registration costs $42, excluding students ($21). This includes food.

The Friday party (in a very nice room at Ivar’s and including a hearty buffet) will be $62 (tax and tip included). As noted above, there will be a talk about wildfires. You can attend the party and watch the rest virtually if needed.

If you want to attend virtual, there is no fee. We’ll send you a Zoom link a few days before the meeting. No food.

After years of virtual meetings due to COVID, it would be nice to meet the community in person. You must register and pay for the above options before the meeting (by May 9).
