The Jockey Club announced on September 9 that it is projecting a North American registered thoroughbred pony breeding stock of 18,500 by 2023, with a population 200 fewer than estimated. The 2022 crop is 18,700 heads.
The foal crop forecast is calculated using the Hybrid Horse Breed Report received so far for the 2022 breeding season. RMB must be submitted by August 1 of each breeding season.

Ponies breeding in North America peaked in the 1980s when more than 50,000 ponies were born in three consecutive years from 1985-87. They have regularly declined over the years, falling below 40,000 in early 1992, below 30,000 in 2010 and falling below 20,000 in early 2021.
Declining vegetation has contributed to the fields being less competitive and smaller. Dealing with drops is often with a reduced field size, with bettors not attracted by the shorter odds on betting prospects.
Barn owners who have not yet returned their RMB for the 2022 breeding season are encouraged to do so as soon as possible.
