Nissan will use electric pickups to power Ariya EVs in California

Nissan Ariya electric SUVs are making part of their journey to dealers on electric pickups.

The automaker said in a press release that it will use up to four battery-powered Class 8 pickups to transport vehicles from the Port of Los Angeles to dealerships. Tractors are being supplied by Nikola and Kenworth. They carry traditional auto carriers and are charged using newly installed hardware at the port, the release said.

The first batch of trucks, including Ariyas and some gasoline vehicles, were delivered to a Downey Nissan dealership in the Los Angeles area in Downey, California.

Nissan sees this as a proof-of-concept test, with the main goal being to learn more about all-electric trucks in this app. The automaker is poised to add more electric trucks in the Los Angeles area, and says the lessons learned from the project could lead to the use of battery-powered trucks “for a variety of after-market uses.” need.”

Nissan didn’t provide any details on these trucks, but each manufacturer mentioned has only one battery-electric Class 8 pickup currently in production—Kenworth T680E and Nikola Bamboo BEV. Nikola finally hopes to launch a hydrogen fuel cell truck version, along with plans 60 hydrogen stations by 2026.

According to Kenworth, the T680E has a total vehicle weight of up to 82,000 pounds and produces 536 horsepower continuously, maximum power up to 670 horsepower and 1,623 lb.-ft. torque and it has a top speed of 70 mph. The operating range of this spec (with load, of course) is 150 miles from the 396 kwh battery pack, and the 120 kw CCS fast charge allows for a full charge in 3.3 hours.

Kenworth also had cooperation with Toyota for fuel cell electric trucks operating in the port of LA, and already producing medium electric truck as K270E and K370E for Layer 6 and Class 7 applications, respectively.

Tesla also used the prototype Semis for a number of deliveries long before Semi is officially in production. The Tesla truck was first shown off in 2017, at which point Tesla said production would begin in 2019, but the company didn’t build the first models for customers until 2022.

As for the Ariya itself, it’s finally reaching US dealers after a slower-than-anticipated price hike. This is an important vehicle for Nissan, representing a complete rethink from the Leaf and the launch of a new platform called the CMF-EV that will be shared with Infiniti and Renault. However, The Leaf will continue with Ariya.
