Nikon patents some cool lens designs

As Nikon moves into the realm of full-frame mirrorless cameras, it often employs utilitarian lens designs that address the vast majority of situations photographers will encounter. However, a bunch of interesting lens design patents have surfaced recently, and they suggest the company is currently thinking of some more extreme options as well.

Nikon’s recent lens patent reveals several ultra-telephoto lens designs, potentially made to match powerful lenses. Z9 . mirrorless camera. Including:

  • 400mm f/4.5
  • 600mmf/5.6
  • 800mmf/6.3
  • 1,000mm f/8

What’s interesting about all of these lenses is that they feature a PF (Phase Fresnel) design, which is Nikon’s term for diffraction optics, allowing for lighter and more portable super-telephoto shooting designs. For the type of photographer who often uses such lenses (mostly sports and wildlife photographers), these designs can be a real boon, given the weight savings. made a significant difference, especially when hiking.

Of course, just because a design is patented, that doesn’t mean the final product will hit the market. However, the company’s AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR pretty much taken seriously, so I assume we’ll see at least one Z-mount PF lens at some point.
