5 Keys to Brilliant Landscape Photos in Terrible Weather

Do you struggle to get high-quality landscape photos in bad weather and low light? Here, we look at five key things you can do to get great landscape photos in bad weather.

You’ve marked the date on your calendar, geared up, polished your lenses, and you’re ready to go into nature and capture a scene from a spot you’ve been looking for for months. Then the day came and the weather was terrible – not only a bit harsh with a bit of cloud cover and a few drops of rain, but ugly. It’s the kind of ugly thing that makes you just want to stay home with a cup of hot chocolate and a big box of ice cream and you’re holding a Netflix remote in your hand. Forget that, because you can rescue your plans and still get great landscape shots when the weather isn’t your friend. How?

That question brings us to this amazing video by Expressive Photography, which walks you through a series of tips and techniques that you can use to use the weather to your advantage. What impressed me most was the mindset: enjoy the elements. You may scoff, but I honestly believe it. I take a lot of ocean photos, often use the waterhouse when surfing, and there were days when I had to force myself out because of the bad conditions. But I almost always find that the wilder the conditions, the more interesting photos I take. You must enjoy the challenge. Benn gives lots of other great tips, many of which are technical, so watch the video and let me know what you think.
