Nikon may have finished creating a new DSLR camera

In news that really shouldn’t come as a surprise to many, Nikon may no longer be developing any new DSLRs, now shifting their focus entirely to their mirrorless line of cameras.

Nikkei Asia is Report that Nikon will no longer develop new DSLR cameras, shifting their focus entirely to their mirrorless camera line. The company’s last DSLR, the D6, launched in early 2020 and is mostly a repeat of the D5, showing signs that the company is slowing down their DSLR development.

Nikkei suggested that stiff competition from smartphone cameras was a contributing factor to Nikon’s decision, with the company choosing to focus on creating cameras that differentiate itself from phones by its features. they. That being said, the company still plans to manufacture and distribute DSLRs for the time being, and it’s unclear when that might drop. In response, Nikon released the following statement:

There was an article in the media regarding Nikon withdrawing the development of the SLR. This media article is speculative and Nikon has made no announcements regarding the matter. Nikon is continuing to manufacture, sell, and service digital SLRs. Nikon appreciates your continued support.

This statement does not contradict the Nikkei article, which only cited the discontinuation of development, not production of DSLR cameras. While Nikon has not confirmed this, I would have a hard time believing they are devoting any significant resources to new DSLR development at the moment, and I would expect Canon to be in a similar position. Within the next few years, Pentax will most likely be the only company producing new DSLR cameras.
