The San Francisco 49ers made a big investment in Trey Lance when they traded four draft picks – including three in the first round – to go ahead and pick North Dakota State midfielder with the 3rd pick in NFL Draft 2021.
After watching much of his rookie season from the sidelines, Lance was named starting midfield for the 2022 season. But a season-ending ankle fracture in Week 2 took a toll on his condition. with 49ers in doubt.

As you can see from the odds above, the rumors seem a bit overblown, at least for now.
Now there are two schools of thought about Lance and the 49ers. One is, you can never have too many talented players in your QB room. Another view is that the 49ers should cut their losses and trade Lance to get back the players and draft capital.
“Unless the 49ers receive an offer too good to turn down, there’s little incentive for them to leave Lance as Purdy’s post-injury comeback schedule is still very long,” said the senior director of the team. FOX Bet Trading Operations, said Dylan Brossman.

Lance had a minimum of NFL experience after two seasons when he broke his ankle at the end of the season on September 18 and required two surgeries. In eight games – four to start – Lance had a pass rate of 56 to 102 (54.9%) in 797 yards, five touchdown passes, three interceptions and a passing index of 84.5.
After Lance was injured, the 49ers switched to the previous start Jimmy Garoppolowho sang along with the 49ers when he broke his leg at the end of the season in Week 13.
Attracting attention was rookie Purdy, who was best known at the time for Mr. Irrelevant is the last option in the draft. The 49ers kept rolling, winning 12 games in a row until they lost Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Championship Game.
The loss to the Eagles brought the 49ers midfield back into focus as San Francisco had to use fourth-string QB Josh Johnson. When Johnson suffered a concussion, it forced Purdy back into the game even though he was unable to throw off the field.

The team has announced that Purdy will be the starter when he returns from off-season elbow surgery. 49ers then added Jimmy G 2.0 by signing a free agent Sam DarnoldWho is the 3rd choice of jet plane in 2018.
Where does that leave Lance?
General Manager John Lynch said all the talk around Lance was… well, just say it.
“I think there’s really a lot of smoke,” Lynch said. “It’s not really active. It’s not like we put it out there, ‘Hey, we’re taking calls for Trey, call 1-800…’ That’s not the process.”
Purdy’s return is a big question mark, fueling speculation about Lance.
“He won’t be able to do anything on the pitch, because who knows? It could last from six months to eight months,” said 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan.
“… We’ll see in three months if he’s ready to camp, then maybe we’d say it’s going to be slow. Maybe Week 1 and Week 4 at the latest. All that’s left is that. is an estimate, and we’ll see what happens.”
As Shanahan said, we’ll see what happens.
