New York owner and breeder Bacon dies at age 95


Longtime New York-based owner and breeder Sanford Bacon died April 12 at age 95 in South Florida.

Bacon’s death was initially reported by Daily Racing Form.

Among Bacon’s top runners was Say Florida Sandy, a son of New York-bred Personal Flag that Bacon bred and owned during his first year on the track from the summer of 1996 to the fall of 1997 before he was asked for $70,000.

During a career that ended in 2003 at age 9, Say Florida Sandy won 33 of 98 starts. He collected 19 stakes wins, including five graded wins, and earned $2,085,408. Among the many awards he created in New York were two Horse of the Year titles in 2000 and 2001.

Bacon also bred and owned Dancin Renee, a half-sister to Say Florida Sandy, who won 14 of 21 starts with earnings of $490,258. A seven-time stakes winner, Dancin Renee won the Honorable Miss Stakes (G3) in the Saratoga Racetrack as part of a seven-race winning streak to close out her career and take home New York-bred Horse of the Year honors in 1997. Bacon subsequently bred and owned the daughter six times winning bet, Risky Rachel, who won nine out of 27 started with earnings of $493,736.
