Newly released surveillance video captured inside Robb Elementary School in Uvlade, Texas, during the May 24 attack, shows officers approaching the classroom where Salvador Ramos killed 21 people, but then retreated down the hallway and covered up the moment the shots rang out.
The video was obtained by the Austin American-Statesman newspaper and published on Tuesday.
The first edited video shows teachers screaming as the gunman crosses the Robb Elementary School parking lot after crashing a truck just outside the property. Once Ramos was inside the building, hallway surveillance cameras showed him walking along the corridor unobstructed with a long rifle. Gunshots were heard as the gunman entered a classroom, and a child at the other end of the hallway was seen running.
The newspaper said it had removed the sound of children’s screams from the video.
The first shots that appeared to have been directed at the responders were fired at 11:37 a.m. local time, prompting the officers to immediately run down the other end of the corridor to retreat. Multiple officers were seen with their guns drawn in the hallway, but were not seen approaching the classroom again until 12:21 p.m., after four more rounds were heard from the gunman. Officers did not directly confront the gunman again until 12:50, killing Ramos.
The Austin American-Statesman released just under five minutes of what it reports as more than 77 minutes of video it captured.
The Texas House of Representatives shooting committee has announced it will release the full video on Sunday after showing it to family members of the victim. A source close to the committee told CNN the plan has not changed.
