President Biden announced Friday the nomination of two new members to the Postal Board of Governors, including a new president, which could mark the end of Louis DeJoy’s controversial tenure with as postmaster general.

Biden nominated Daniel Tangherlini, a Democrat, to replace Board Chairman Ron Bloom, whose term is nearing the end of his term. Bloom is also a Democrat, but a key ally of DeJoy.

Biden also nominated Derek Kan, a Republican, to replace Republican John Barger, who is also nearing the end of his term.

Tangherlini was an administrator for the General Services Administration during the Obama administration, and Kan served as deputy director of the Office of Management and Budget and a junior secretary of the Department of Transportation during the Trump administration.

DeJoy is a major donor to the Trump campaign as well as other GOP groups. He angered Democrats by proposing drastic cuts to mail service ahead of the 2020 election, in which voting by mail became a necessity for many because of the coronavirus pandemic. DeJoy’s proposal was overturned under pressure from lawmakers and after several court orders.

He was recently criticized for his 10-year plan to reorganize the Postal Service, which has led to a slowdown in some mail operations as well as higher rates of first-class mail and packages.

White House press secretary Jen Psaki said the administration “continues to be deeply troubled” by reports of DeJoy’s conflicts of interest and has “serious problems with the job he is doing running the Postal Service.” .”

DeJoy’s critics have praised the administration’s unexpected moves.

“President Biden listened to millions of people across the country demanding a return to the post’s quiet authority before Louis DeJoy and his friend Ron Bloom broke it,” said Porter McConnell of the Save the Post Office Campaign. spoil it. Ron Bloom has no place in the future of the USPS, and we are pleased to see his tenure in the past. “

Rep. Gerald Connolly, D-Va., who chairs the Postal Service Oversight Subcommittee, said he was “excited that the two DeJoy triggers have been replaced,” calling it a “great thing for the the American people.”

Naming the postmaster general is up to the Board of Governors. If Biden’s new nominations are approved, the panel will maintain its current composition of four Democrats, four Republicans and one independent. But by replacing Bloom, Biden may have tipped the balance in favor of a new postmaster general.
