New Stellantis feature can alert nearby emergency vehicles
Stellantis‘ connect The infotainment system will now notify drivers of oncoming emergency vehicles, but only if you are in the United States or Canada.
1.8 million Chrysler, Dodge, Ram and Jeep vehicles with Uconnect from 2018 onwards now support the feature, known as the Emergency Vehicle Alert System (EVAS).
Using a trigger alert system, if an emergency vehicle has its lights on, it transmits its GPS coordinates to the HAAS Alert Safety Cloud Platform.
A notification from the cloud-based platform will be sent to nearby drivers to warn them of oncoming vehicle that may be traveling at high speed.
In addition to emergency vehicles, the HAAS Alerts platform also receives and sends alerts for trailers, disabled vehicles, construction sites, temporary traffic signs, and highway gates.
The company is looking to expand its vehicle-to-vehicle communication system by allowing passenger vehicles to communicate with the HAAS Alert platform using the Advanced Hazard Positioning Protocol (HELP).
This feature will allow drivers to receive notifications of damaged vehicles up to 500 meters away from their route and will work similarly to EVAS.
Once the driver has activated the disabled media button, it will alert the HELP system and send the exact GPS coordinates to the HAAS Alert Safety Cloud Platform. The cloud platform then relays the notification to nearby drivers via Uconnect.
The aim is to give drivers a 15-20 second warning in advance of a vehicle breaking down, about 500m at highway speeds.
HELP will be manually activated unless the driver is involved in a crash or a tire blows out.
The company is looking to further improve the software with HELP LED lighting alerts that will flash hazard warning lights and other exterior lights at a “scientifically adjusted speed and pattern to attract attention.” intuition of oncoming drivers”.
The company has been analyzing data from its Uconnect app including EVAS alerts, SOS calls and vehicle status reports to help it advance its advanced vehicle safety technology.
