New Mitsubishi Triton awarded five stars in ANCAP crash test – first truck tested under 2023-2025 criteria

The New Mitsubishi Triton was awarded the maximum five stars in the Australian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP). Triton is the first dual-cab pickup truck to be tested and evaluated according to ANCAP’s current evaluation criteria for the period 2023-2025. Results apply to all 2WD and 4WD Double Cab variants sold in Australia and New Zealand.

Introduced in two countries in February, Triton demonstrated high levels of protection for the driver, adult front-seat passengers and children in the majority of physical crash tests. Maximum scores were achieved by the passenger in the front-offset test, the driver in the full-width front and side-pillar test, and both baby pacifiers in the test. Check for frontal and side impacts.

Opportunity for improvement was noted for the smaller rear passenger’s chest and lower legs in the front full width test, where a ‘Weak’ chest score was noted and a penalty was applied for increased risk of abdominal injury in this collision situation.

As part of the destructive test suite, ANCAP evaluates the potential risk of injury to other vehicle occupants if struck by the test vehicle. The Triton has been shown to pose a relatively moderate risk compared to other vehicles in its class.

According to ANCAP, this shows a carefully considered design by Mitsubishi to minimize the risk that the Triton poses to other road users. This considered design approach was also evident in pedestrian impact tests, where grilles and bumpers scored highly in their assessment of risk to pedestrians’ legs or pelvis .

“This rating demonstrates Mitsubishi’s determination and ability to design, build and deliver 5-star products. Double cabs are one of the best-selling models in Australia and New Zealand – bought in large numbers by general consumers as well as fleet buyers. In many cases, they are commercial workhorses but also family staples, so it’s great to see Mitsubishi put in the effort and achieve this 5-star result,” ANCAP CEO Carla Hoorweg said.

“There is an established and recognized expectation in the market for 5-star vehicles in the pickup truck segment. Manufacturers’ desire to achieve five stars will extend across all market segments, not just those targeted by fleet buyers,” she added.

In collision avoidance testing, the Triton scored 70% – the threshold score for a five-star rating. The truck’s automatic emergency braking (AEB) system is capable of detecting/reacting to other vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists in a variety of situations; however, it does not extend to more complex AEB situations such as T-bone collision avoidance and frontal collisions. This limited its overall Safety Assist score.

A driver monitoring system (DMS) is also recommended under the Safety Assist rating, and the Triton offers direct DMS as standard.

“Live driver monitoring systems are relatively new to the market, with Triton being one of the first live DMS systems we have evaluated locally. Triton meets the ANCAP protocol requirements for fatigue and distraction warnings, however Mitsubishi’s implementation of this system could be improved by reducing unnecessary warnings to the driver ,” Hoorweg said.

In addition to visual alerts, manufacturers can choose between tactile or audible DMS alerts to score points according to the ANCAP protocol. Distraction warnings when reversing, parking or when traveling at speeds below 10 km/h are not required or rewarded by ANCAP.

Already Crash test in ASEAN and launched in Thailand – where it is manufactured and exported – the Triton is powered by a new 2.4-litre engine codenamed 4N16, offered in three states of tune – 150 PS/330 Nm, 184 PS /430 Nm and 204 PS/470 Nm. Top of the range Athletes we feature at BIMS 2024 has the most powerful engine, combined with MMC’s Super Select 4WD-II system with Active Yaw Control (AYC). The new Triton is set to to Malaysia before the end of 2024.
