New images from Animal Equality show the short but harsh life of chickens

Animal Equality is a beacon that illuminates the darkest corners of agriculture around the world. Committed to exposing the truths hidden behind the closed doors of farms and abattoirs, our global organization is a powerful force for change in the battle to protect wildlife. object. Animal Equality has been closely monitoring developments in Jalisco, Mexico as part of its mission to promote legal action and animal protection in the country.

Our team in Mexico is releasing new insights into the mistreatment of chickens in Mexican slaughterhouses. Through these new findings, we expose a disturbing pattern of cruelty, abuse, and regulatory non-compliance that is still concealed by consumers and authorities.

The newly released document paints a picture of a chicken’s journey to the slaughterhouse. During transport, workers forcefully handle poultry with their feet, often resulting in injury due to rough handling and carelessness.

These cases are not isolated incidents but reflect a common practice in the global chicken industry. The investigation proved that the chickens were killed at 42 days old, after suffering a short life of abuse and pain.

Incorrect slaughter method:

In some of the most shocking footage, investigators discovered chickens being slaughtered while fully awake. According to the National Service for Public Agricultural Health, Safety and Quality (SENASICA) in Mexico, the agency that deals with the handling and slaughter of animals for human consumption, guidelines for the slaughter of animals. state that Chickens must be stunned before slaughter.

Anesthesia is the process of rendering an animal unconscious or unable to feel pain prior to slaughter, and the purpose, although still inhumane, is to reduce the animal’s suffering and stress during the slaughter process. surgery.

According to our investigation, many chickens are not effectively anesthetized before slaughter, which means they remain awake or may feel pain when killed. This can cause animals to experience significant suffering at the end of their lives.

Failure to effectively anesthetize chickens before slaughter can occur for a variety of reasons, including inadequate training for slaughterhouse workers, poor equipment maintenance, or the use of inappropriate slaughtering methods or obsolete. In some cases, slaughterhouses may prioritize speed and efficiency over animal welfare, which can result in chickens suffering a brutal death.

In some processing plants throughout Mexico, a conical cutting system is used. After anesthesia, the chickens were placed upside down in a cone-shaped device, where their throats were supposed to be cut briefly within 20 seconds. The investigation found that this important step is often overlooked, leading to prolonged suffering and non-compliance with regulations.

Videos obtained from the investigation depict injured chickens being suddenly hung upside down by their injured limbs on the tracks. The chickens were then submerged in electrified water in an attempt to make them unconscious. However, anesthesia often fails, as evidenced by the bird showing signs of distress, including flapping its wings, chirping and trying to stand up.

As a result, these chickens have their throats cut by a knife while awake and can feel pain.

Breaking the cycle of torture: Advocating for change in chicken slaughterhouses:

In 2021, Animal Equality Company has conducted an extensive undercover investigation inside 21 slaughterhouses located in seven different Mexican states, where extreme mistreatment of animals such as cows, pigs and chickens has been discovered. During our investigation, our team documented operations commonly used at slaughterhouses across Mexico, including government-owned facilities in Nuevo León, Aguascalientes, San Luis Potosí, Colima, Zacatecas, Nayarit and Jalisco, where new evidence of animal cruelty on the part of chickens has been found.

The images taken by our team provide evidence that these facilities consistently violate Mexican animal protection laws without any legal consequences. In 2021, Mexico sees the slaughter of more than 2.51 billion animals for food, the majority of which are chickens. 98% of animals slaughtered are chickens, while the remaining 2% include pigs, cows, turkeys, goats and sheep. This indicates that chickens are the most consumed, abused and killed terrestrial animal in the country. These shocking numbers reveal the scale of the chickens used for meat within the Mexican border.

Animal Equality’s tireless efforts in exposing the realities faced by chickens have had a significant impact on public awareness and consciousness. Many individuals have opted for non-toxic alternatives and have begun replacing chicken in their diets.

All sentient animals, such as chickens, should be protected by law and must be monitored and punished. The best way to change an animal’s life is to choose plant-based alternatives to meat, dairy and eggs.
