Obedience is not everything. These dogs may be lazy, some playful and others independent, but surely they all have one thing in common? Stubbornness!
All of these breeds are absolutely adorable and have other traits that could still make them your perfect companion…if you don’t mind a training challenge!
#1 – Beagle
Adorable independent, Beagle will find joy anywhere if left to their own devices. There will be trouble with an indifferent owner who doesn’t appreciate what the Beagle has to offer.
#2 – British Bulldog
An extremely intelligent breed, the English Bulldog can have a rather thick skull when in the care of a frail human. They will be deaf if there is no respect in the family.
#3 – Dachshund
The Dachshund is a very large dog in a very small package. They know how to hold their own and some will get a dog five times their size because they think they can do it.
#4 – Jack Russell Terrier
The mischievous Jack Russell has no problem starting a fight of wills with an owner they consider wise. They are tough, smart and full of energy.
#5 – Rottweiler
As an incredible family dog, the Rottweiler needs a firm hand of training from an experienced handler. If given the right to lead the pack, this powerful breed will assume the command and it really won’t look good.
#6 – Dogo Argentino
Not for the faint-hearted, the Dogo Argentino (or Argentinian Mastiff) is an independent breed that needs a firm hand of training and plenty of exercise to keep them from finding their own amusement.
#7 – Chinese Shar Pei
Most publications listing this ancient breed will note that they were independent. Although they can be a devoted family dog, owners will have to earn the dogs’ loyalty.
#8 – Afghan Hound
Rumored to be one of the most ancient breeds, the Afghan Hound comes about by their aloof nature honestly. They require an owner who appreciates their haughty sensibilities.
#9 – Scottish Terrier
Primarily a single dog, the Scottish Terrier has no interest in anyone outside of his inner circle. The only person he’s attached to needs to maintain leadership over this independent breed.
# 10 – Weimaraner
Extremely intelligent, the Weimaraner needs an owner to match its agile intelligence and maintain a solid, fun training schedule. If not, “Grey Ghost” will show just how independent they can be.
