As an intelligent dog breed, the Schnauzer is known as the “dog with a human brain”. However, thanks to his devoted nature, Schnauzer also figuratively captures the hearts of many people. This breed is much loved by anyone lucky enough to welcome a Schnauzer into their lives and have their own pet holiday: National Schnauzer Day!

Did you know that the name Schnauzer comes from the German word for muzzle?

Along with looking quite stylish, the beard and mustache, the sporty Schnauzer has a purpose. Originally bred as rat traps on farms, the thick coat protected the dog’s skin from rodent bites.

Three breeds of Schauzers

There are actually three varieties of Schnauzer!

  • Miniature Schnauzer: The popular Miniature Schnauzer has been around since the late 19th century. Developed by pairing the Standard Schnauzer with the Affenpinscher and the Miniature Poodle, dogs of this breed are about a foot tall.
  • Standard Schnauzer: The “parent” of both the miniature and “giant” Schnauzer, the Standard Schnauzer made its debut in 14th or 15th century Germany. Also known as the Mittelschnauzer, the breed was originally called the Wire-Haired Pinscher.
  • Giant Schnauzer: A product of pairing the Standard Schnauzer with giant breeds such as the Great Dane, German Shepherd, Rottweiler and Doberman Pinscher, among others, the Giant Schnauzer Stand about two feet tall at the shoulder.

Which schnauzer is the most popular?

While all Schnauzers hold the number one spot in the hearts of their pet parents, Miniature Schnauzer took 18th place on the latest American Kennel Club’s list of most popular dog breeds, while the Giant Schnauzer came in at number 65. The Standard Schnauzer was at number 96.

So far only a miniature set of Schnauzer feet has strolled through the halls of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. They belonged to Otis, a miniature Schnauzer whose parents were the 19th President of the United States, Rutherford B. Hayes. (Learn more about presidential pet in our Flag Day post!)

The best in the show

Now, Parsifal di Casa Netzer, Standard Schnauzer, is the only member of the breed to win the top honors at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. Better known as Pa, the canine champion was named Best in Show in 1997.

In December 2021, a giant Schnauzer named Bayou won the title of top dog at the AKC National Championship.

All three Schnauzer breeds are generally healthy, with a life expectancy of 12-15 years.

The beauty of the Schnauzer has inspired many eminent artists over the centuries. The most famous artist of the German renaissance, Albrecht Durer captured the loveliness of this breed in several paintings.

Visitors to Germany can see The Night Watchman, which overlooks the streets of Stuttgart atop a sculptural fountain. Along with the shape of the watchman is the sculptural resemblance of a Schnauzer.

Schnauzer in Literature

For fans of classic movies, Asta In skinny man The movie franchise is a male Wire Fox Terrier, who is portrayed by the long-tailed Skippy bird.

However, lovers of classic mystery novels know the high profile social killers Nick and Nora Charles’ best friend as author Dashiell Hammett created the character, as a Women’s Standard Schnauzer.

  • Bob and Elizabeth Dole – The political couple once hosted a birthday party for their miniature Schnauzer II Leader at their Watergate apartment.
  • Errol Flynn – The hottie star also got the real-life role of a pet parent for a miniature schnauzer named Arno.

  • Katherine Heigl – Emmy Award-winning actress and Jason Debus Foundation co-founder Heigl was a pet parent of Miniature Schnauzers Romeo and Stella.
