A small dog named Annie was found lost in Massachusetts. She suffered second degree burns, so she couldn’t get very far after suffering those injuries. She also has a collar and leash but no identification tag or microchip. So it looks like someone abandoned her after setting her on fire.
Annie’s rescuers are still uncertain about her past, but they are doing everything they can to ensure her future is bright. Being rescued likely saved her life.
Burned and alone
Annie, who was likely a Beagle mix, suffered second-degree burns to 20% of her body. There were burns on the face, neck, shoulders, legs and abdomen. Officials believe the burn was caused by someone pouring hot water on her. The Boston’s Animal Rescue take Annie in and treat her burns.
Mike DeFina, communications officer for the Animal Society, said: ‘The first time I met Annie was heartbreaking. “To see her in that state and see that she was in dire need of help, she desperately needed help.”

The rescue attempt to find Annie’s owner had no luck. Most lost dogs are confirmed within 24 hours, but no one has called Annie yet. Her owners may be the ones who harmed and abandoned her, but authorities don’t want to jump to conclusions.
Lieutenant Alan Borgal of the Animal Rescue Federation said: “It’s not just a burn, it’s an abandonment. “This is a very cruel renunciation.”
Officials have received security footage from a Burger King on 1st Street near where Annie was abandoned, but they are still unaware of her abuser. Even a single burn was painful, so it was heartbreaking to think how much pain Annie had to endure.
Look to the future
During her comprehensive recovery at Tufts Veterinary Emergency Services, Annie has made a lot of progress. She was back at the rescue team’s facility in Dedham, Massachusetts. She loves to run around the playground of her home, so everyone involved is optimistic about her healing process.
“Ultimately, the hope is that we will find her a new home where she will be loved and cared for,” DeFina said.
