He started by photographing racing and socializing scenes at Hialeah Park in Florida. By 1940, Morgan was hired as the official photographer for the New York racetracks (later the New York Racing Association). His son eventually opened the Bert and Richard Morgan Studio with him in 1956. Together they captured some of the most important moments in thoroughbred racing history.

At the races with Saul Steinberg
In 1952, artist Saul Steinberg visited Saratoga Springs at the request of Harper’s magazine to provide drawings for a Spa article. Although he had previously created a series of paintings of horses and their riders in the 1940s, this visit may have sparked his interest in thoroughbred horse racing.

The drawings featured in this exhibition span a four-year period from 1955 to 1959. Three were published in his book The Labyrinth in 1960. One was later published in Sports. The 1963 Illustrated “Steinberg at the Races” featured scenes at the racetrack from Paris to Los Angeles. Exhibition from now to December 2023
