Titles for top trainers, jockeys and owners were awarded throughout Sunday. Gerardo Corrales was awarded Top Player and Top Owner to Gary and Mary West. There has been a tripartite tie for the top coach between Steve Asmussen, Brad Cox and John Ortiz going on the final day. The decisive victory came early in the day as coach John Ortiz added another first race win against A Little Wild, the Union Rags’ first child. The award marks the first Top Coach title for youth coach John Ortiz.
“I want to thank everyone at Ellis Park, the management, the racing office, the hospitality and the fans. It’s a great place to be. They’ve done so much for the race, plus I’ve always run here, ever since I was assistant coach for Kellyn Gorder, when we won the title with Buff Bradley in 2014. It’s just been my dream to come back here and get it for yourself,” Ortiz commented. “I’ve admired Steve and Brad all my life, I appreciate them, I call them when I need any advice and they’re always there for me. To be able to run one, two, three with me. they… I’m third on the leaderboard at Oaklawn this year against them and to be able to beat them… this is my Saratoga meeting. It means a lot.”
For the 2022 race, Ellis Park offers many nostalgic track events and promotions that were lost from before COVID-19. This community’s favorites include things like blanket presentations, wiener dog races, dollar day, and Family Day.

Ellis Park partnered with local police and fire departments to thank the community for the support as well as more than a dozen local and endemic 503c nonprofits during the Summer RUNHAPPY 2022 at Ellis Park to giving back to the Henderson community, including: Alliance (TAA), Jockeys Across America (PDJF), Susan G. Komen, Healing Reins of Kentucky, PAAWS, New Hope Animal Rescue Center, New Life Rescues, Vanderburgh Humane Society, Boys & Girls Club of Henderson, Horsemen’s Benevolent & Protection Organization (HBPA), Horses & Hope, etc.
