Don’t let their name fool you! Contrary to popular belief, the Australian Shepherd is not actually from The Land Down Under. The breed may have originated in the Basque region of Spain, then developed in the western United States, where the dogs helped cowboys and sheep ranchers.
The Australian Shepherd is number one in the hearts of their pet parents, and the breed isn’t far from the top spot on the annual American Kennel Club’s list of most popular dogs, with the Aussie landing in 12th place in 2021.
Long live Australian shepherd! The average life expectancy for members of this breed is 13 – 15 years.
Regardless of color (which can range from sky blue to brown), the Australian Shepherd’s eyes are so hauntingly beautiful… that members of the breed are known as Ghost eyes among several Native American tribes.
The Australian Shepherd’s coat comes in a variety of colors, with the American Kennel Club recognizing black, blue, red and red.
An Australian Shepherd/Border Collie mix is named Sweet pea Set some world records! Famous Australian Shepherds
Combining real life with “flowing life”, silent film star Jack Hoxie shared the big screen with his dog companion Bunk in many West. Australian Shepherd (who also replied to the sweet party Bunky Beans) first step in front of the camera in 1924 for the film Montana’s Ridgeway, with his career moving into the beginnings of “talkers”. After a full life that included traveling across America with her famous pet mother, Bunk crossed the Rainbow Bridge at the age of 18.
Queenie, Short and FatFamous people on the rodeo track in the 1950s, trainer Jay Sisler’s puppies also became big-screen stars, appearing in several Disney live-action films.
Rowdy– Transforming from a child into a dog, bully Eddie McDowd performed acts of kindness to return to his original form in the Nickelodeon series 100 certificates for Eddie McDowd. The dog Eddie was depicted by a former shelter dog named Rowdy. Television fans may also recognize the Australian Shepherd/Siberian Husky from his role as Dasher in the Hallmark Channel series. Tuffy– Born in 1930 on a Cheyenne reservation in South Dakota, this talented Australian Shepherd/Collie would become a Hollywood star, appearing in eight westerns on the big screen. Tuffy understands commands in several languages.
Although currently no member of the breed has earned top honors at the Westminster Dog Show, an Australian dog named Reckon won Best in Show at the 2010 American Kennel Club National Championship and an Australian Shepherd named Caitland Island Take a chance stood on the podium as the 2006 Crufts winner.
A dog who made the leap from a shelter life to a life of service as a member of the Rhode Island State Police, an Australian Shepherd/Border Collie is known Ruby received the 2018 Search and Rescue Hero Dog Award, and her life was celebrated in the Netflix biopic Rescued by Ruby.

Paul Bettany and Jennifer Connelly– This famous couple shared happy years with an Australian named Pippy.
George W. Bush and Laura Bush– Choose the option of adopting a pet, the former President and First Lady have found Freddy, their Australian Shepherd mix, at the SPCA’s Jan Rees-Jones Animal Care Center of Texas in Dallas. At the time, Freddy was 12 weeks old, one of the puppies discovered by a sanitation worker at a landfill.
Holly Marie Combs– This one’s fur family Attractive actress who once included an Australian called Lolawho was given the star by Alyssa Milano’s mother.
Larry David– Year 2020 Curb your enthusiasm star merger is enthusiastic about the subject of becoming a new spotted dog, dad with an Aussie named Bernie.
Nina Dobrev– Maverickan Australian Shepherd/Border Collie puppy from LA-based rescue organization The Pet Care Foundation who starred in the life of Diary of a vampire in 2017.
Jane Lynch– A voiced Aussie mix Francis Willoughby won the heart of the Emmy, Golden Globe and SAG award-winning actress at a pet adoption event in Studio City, California in 2011.
Mike Pence– The former Vice President greeted an Australian he named Harley into her heart and home in 2017. Harley’s fur siblings include a cat named Hazel and a rabbit called Marlon Brando.
Amanda Seyfried– Finn, the hairy baby of the Oscar-nominated actress is a star in his own right, with his own Instagram account. His rescue dog and movie star Mom even used their shared fame to shine a light on pet adoption when they joined I’m Best Friends Animal Society. My Best Friend campaign saved.
Britney Spears– In 2022, the “Baby One More time” singer introduced her fans to her new fur baby, Sawyer. As usual with an Australian pet parent, the singer said: “I think he understands me especially with those eyes 😍… he makes my heart melt… he needs me and I like it. there !!!!!”
Steven Spielberg– The Oscar-winning director turned to Hollywood’s Golden Age for inspiration when he named his Australian Shepherd Harlow.
Steve Wozniak– The Apple co-founder was once a proud pet parent to an Australian Shepherd called Cruiser.
