My low energy dog tries fresh food for the first time

Mabel, my rescue dog, loves food. However, her usual diet usually includes kibble. Although she loves to eat, I can tell that she is no longer interested in frequent snacking. So I was eager to try different foods. When ollieA fresh dog food company that specializes in customizing dog meals, sent us some samples, which I can’t wait to try.

Mabel’s face lit up as we received the first package from Ollie. When I opened the box, she sniffed around like crazy and she remained curious even after I put the food away. It was the most exciting thing I’ve ever seen her get in terms of dog food! Her excitement makes me eager to see what she thinks of the new dish. Continue reading to see my Ollie customer review.

Get started with Ollie dog food

Immediately, I found Ollie’s process more convenient than going to the store to buy dog food. I filled out an online questionnaire with Mabel’s information, including her weight, activity level, recipe preferences, and allergies. Mabel is a low energy dog, so I hope her meal plan will help her maintain a healthy weight.

Ollie offers fresh and mixed meal plans (fresh and baked). I chose a mixed plan with Ollie’s chicken-flavored fresh and grilled foods because chicken is Mabel’s favorite flavor. However, they have several other flavors available:

  • Clean food – Beef, chicken, turkey, lamb
  • barbecue – Beef, Chicken

After answering all the questions, the food was delivered to my door in less than a week! This is my Ollie dog food review on how to pack and store it.

What is included in the box?

When I opened the box from Ollie, I was shocked to see all that was included. This is all I get:

  • Mabel feeding guide
  • Food storage boxes
  • Measuring cup (comes with the mixed meal package only)
  • food scoop
  • Light baked food bag
  • Seven packs of fresh food

Fresh food is frozen in an insulated package with dry ice on top of the food. It’s very cold inside, so fresh food will freeze even if I don’t bring in the box right away. Baked foods and other items are placed on the insulated package to prevent overheating.

Food storage

The food box also comes with instructions on how to store and serve. Fortunately, foods that are lightly baked have a stable shelf life and can be stored as crumbs. I left it in a dry place where I normally leave kibble. For maximum freshness, food should be used within 12 months. When you open it, the bag can be locked, making it easy to store and serve.

However, fresh food is a different story. Ollie’s fresh food recipe is gently cooked and then quick frozen. So the food is frozen and will stay frozen until you are ready to serve it to your furry friend. Fresh foods can be stored in the freezer for up to six months.

Before giving your dog fresh food, you should transfer the frozen package to the refrigerator and let it defrost for at least 24 hours. The “storage tray” that comes with the food makes it easy to store packages in the refrigerator, even when they are opened. Once food is defrosted, it will stay fresh for up to four days in the refrigerator. Ollie’s fresh food preservation process is more complicated than traditional dog food, but it didn’t take me long to get used to the new food routine.

Ollie dog food review: My dog ate Ollie for the first time!

Mabel was excited to try ollie the first time even before I scooped it into her bowl. However, I don’t want to rush into it. Although Mabel has never had any food sensitivities, fresh foods are a drastic change from crumbs. I gradually transitioned her to Ollie’s food by mixing some of her solids with the new food for the first few days.

Ollie always recommends that dog parents use a gradual transition to avoid digestive problems in dogs. Here is the procedure they recommend:

  • Day 1-2: Add a small amount of Ollie to your dog’s current food.
  • Day 3-4: Mix half your dog’s Ollie ration with half their current food ration.
  • Day 5-6: Mix 75% of your dog’s Ollie diet with 25% of your dog’s current diet.
  • 7th: Serve your dog a full Ollie portion without any of their stale food.

Mabel switched to Ollie

Step 1 – Add Ollie Roast Dog Food

Ollie’s baked food is similar to crumbs because it has a stable shelf life and can be simply poured into your dog’s bowl. However, it is slow cooked with no preservatives to ensure that the food retains more nutrients than crumbs. It’s easy to measure because the measuring cup that comes in the box has the measurements on it, so I can make sure Mabel gets the right amount.

From a distance, the lightly toasted food looks like any other dry dog food, but when you look closely, you can see bits of real meat, vegetables, and fruit in the food. These pieces are thinner and lighter than the kibble Mabel used to use, but she immediately fell in love with the taste more than any other dog food.

I started by mixing some baked goods with Mabel’s crumbs for her first meal. I didn’t add fresh food in the first meal as it was still defrosting and I wanted to see how she would react to each baked item. As soon as she smelled something new added to her dish, she wagged her tail like crazy and tried to sit still to snap pictures next to her plate.

Even though she’s eaten the grilled pieces before, she doesn’t completely ignore her old food. Soon, her entire plate was empty as usual, but she took the extra time to lick the bowl clean.

Step 2 – Add Ollie Fresh Dog Food

For Mabel’s next meal, I tried mixing some fresh dog food with her crumbs to see if her reaction was different from baked dog food. As soon as I opened one of the packages, she ran over, sniffing around like crazy. Fresh dog food has a strong, but not unpleasant, smell.

It’s messier to put fresh food in a bowl than serving grilled dog food or crumbs. However, the spoon that comes in the box makes it easier to break up food and transfer it to the bowl without leaving food all over the place. When I shoveled the food, some crumbs fell on the counter, but cleaning up fresh food was much easier than I expected. As the name suggests, Ollie’s fresh food is packed with fresh, nutrient-rich ingredients to promote dog health.

When I mixed fresh food with crumbs, Mabel couldn’t contain her excitement. Fresh food appealed to her more than baked goods. As you can imagine, it’s almost impossible to get a good picture of her next to the food. When I put its bowl on the mat, it didn’t hesitate to gobble up its new food. She licked the bowl like crazy, and I don’t think she would have stopped licking if I hadn’t told her it was time to get out.

Step 3 – Mix fresh food and bake

For the next meals, I mix some fresh food and grilled food with some crushed ice. Mabel seems to handle the new food well (no noticeable digestive issues), but I’d still be cautious for a few more days just to be on the safe side.

Mabel is excited about any dish I give her, but it is certain that fresh food smells most appealing to her. However, she always eats all the food in her bowl, so the new food doesn’t stop her from enjoying the kibble either. However, I will need to wait until her transition period is over to give the most accurate assessment of Ollie dog food.

Continue using Ollie dog food

When I was confident that Mabel’s stomach could handle the new food, I took her crumbs away and gave her 100% Ollie. I fed her a mixture of fresh and baked foods as directed. The instructions that come with the products make it easy for her to portion portions for each meal. They told her how much of each food she should eat each day, along with how much would be per meal if you served two meals a day (me too).

Mabel was in good shape for her age (she was 9 years old) before trying Ollie and I’m happy to say she seems to be doing fine with her new diet. Her stools are still solid and she has maintained a healthy weight. After the meal, she seemed more playful and affectionate than before. I’m not sure if that has anything to do with her health or if she’s just excited about the food. Either way, both Mabel and I are pleased with the results.

Customer Review: Would I Recommend Ollie Dog Food?

Now that Mabel has tried both of Ollie’s foods, I would definitely recommend the brand to other dog parents. ollie They are a trusted brand, but now that I have used their products, I am even more assured of their quality and convenience.

What I love about Ollie

  • Ollie ships right to your door so you don’t waste time running to the pet store.
  • The shipment comes with catering instructions specific to your dog’s needs to avoid overfeeding or underfeeding.
  • You can see individual ingredients in food because it’s not as processed as kibble.
  • The scent and taste appeal to most dogs, especially picky eaters. I love how it got Mabel more excited about the meal!
  • Ollie has a wide selection: four fresh food flavors and two grilled food flavors.
  • Fresh food is easy to chew for dogs, great for old dogs and dogs with dental problems.
  • All dogs can benefit from this food, even if they are as low in calories as Mabel.

Serving Ollie to Mabel

Is there anything I don’t like?

Storing and serving Ollie requires a bit more effort than traditional kibble, but that’s not the downside. Instead, it was just something I had to get used to. Food is messier than crumbs, but the spoon included in the first box makes it easy to transfer fresh food to the bowl without getting food stuck in your hands.

There were a few times when I almost forgot to move a fresh pack of fresh food from the freezer to the fridge, but now that I’ve gotten into the habit, I don’t forget. If any pet parent is worried about forgetting, setting a reminder on your phone can be an easy solution.

All Dog Parents Should Consider Ollie

With all that in mind, ollie is a great consideration for any pet parent looking for a new food. If you’re as used to serving snacks as I am, it may take some time to get used to Ollie’s fresh food, but the many benefits make the change well worth it. Ollie is not only conveniently delivered to your door, but it also provides flavorful food with fresh, healthy ingredients. Best of all, the serving instructions are tailored to your dog’s needs, so there’s no question about how much to give them.
