So I reached out to hairstylists Jemma Mewies at Mewies & Co and Jake Wanstall at Larry King for their top tips on how to get a sleek high bun.

Jennifer Lopez gives us a lesson in a slicked back hairstyle for day wear in a dandy white shirt and gold jewelry.

“For the perfect shine, start with clean hair and blow-dry with a lightweight product with a flexible hold. This will give hair more grip and texture without weighing it down too much. ,” speak mewies.

This styling cream gives hair medium hold to help create the base for your sleek bun.

“After blow-drying, part hair in the middle for this look and straighten (after applying heat protection!) into small sections to help eliminate frizz and create a cleaner, smoother look, ” said mewies. “Make sure you keep the iron close to your head, especially around the hairline.”

This cult stylist creates sleek styles in minutes.

“After straightening and cooling, apply your hair conditioner to smooth the hair and create a high shine,” says mewies, who recommends looking for something super lightweight. “Remember to comb the product thoroughly as this helps to distribute it evenly.”

This oil smooths hair strands to create an ultra-shiny look.

“Next, it’s time to tie your ponytail,” says mewies. “Position is important, so don’t let the nape of the neck be too high or too low. The middle of the nape is where you want it to be,” she says. “Once fixed, twist and curl the ponytail into a coiled shape around the hair tie and pin it when the hair begins to curl. Let the hair move in its own direction. Don’t push the hair too much into a shape that the hair doesn’t want it to. Go!”

A bungee hair band will make this style much easier, say Wanstall. “The Bungee tie will keep the ponytail super tight,” he says.

A bungee cord will allow you to wrap the tie around your hair several times before hooking it to the other end, providing better hold than a standard hair tie.

“Once in place, make sure all the pins are hidden and then use hairspray or cream to smooth over any flight paths around the hairline.” mewies. “Use pomade to create a great shine and hold without overburdening your hair.”

Smooth tame edges and flight paths with this handy cream and brush.

The smoothing nozzle on this hair dryer helps to deliver shiny hair and silky length.

This pomade is loved for its matte effect.

Duplicate your sleek bun with a hair mask. Simply apply through the length of wet hair and style for a hairstyle that multitasks throughout the day.

The natural stiff bristled brush is ideal for brushing all the hair as you put it back in a bun, leaving behind a smooth, frizz-free finish.

Thanks to a mascara brush-like applicator, this lightweight yet sturdy hold gel is perfect for smoothing frizzy and bouncy hair on the go.

The perfect finish to a sleek bun? Light. This ultra-fine mist adds just the right amount, so hair never looks greasy.
