The film has grossed over 16.2 billion yen ($116.24 million) and has remained in the top spots at the Japanese box office. For reference, the film premieres on August 6, 2022. To celebrate the film’s upcoming North American release, Toei Animation promoted Movie One Piece: Red in New York.
As of the time of writing, Movie One Piece: Red in eleventh place above all-time box office charts In Japan. It’s just behind Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, had total sales of 17.3 billion yen. Other animated movies higher in the rankings include Princess Mononoke, Frozen, Spirited Away, and Demon Slayer: Mugen Ship.
Coinciding with New York Comic Con 2022, Luffy and the rest of the Straw Hat Pirates made a big splash at the Big Apple. On October 6, 2022, NYCC had a exclusive premiere screened at AMC Lincoln Square 13, with 450 spectators filling capacity. Besides a screening, there is also a panel for Movie One Piece: Red at Comic Con. About 4,500 fans were present. The organizing committee members include key Toei Animation staff and members of the English dub cast.
Those who can’t attend Comic Con but are in New York also have the chance to witness an hour-long ad takeover campaign in Times square. On October 8, 2022, many digital billboards in New York’s famous Times Square displayed videos of Luffy, the Straw Hat Pirates, and Uta. The commercials begin with a countdown before showing some key moments in the anime.
