More than 11k crossed the Malaysia-Singapore land border in the first 7 hours of reopening; queue at Woodlands, Tuas
After two long years, the Malaysia-Singapore land border has finally reopened to all vaccinated travelers without Covid-19 testing or quarantine. The world’s busiest border crossing was abruptly closed more than two years ago. It was March 18, 2020, the beginning of the pandemic and Malaysia’s movement control order.
As expected, last night there was a line at Woodlands checkpoint in Singapore to be the first to walk across the Causeway, and Immigration and Checkpoints Authority of Singapore (ICA) also reported queuing for cars and motorcycles at both Woodlands and Tuas checkpoints.
“Most of the visitors had their documents ready and so immigration went smoothly. Overall, immigration clearance was smooth and there were no queues before 1 a.m.,” said ICA, the report of CNAtook pictures and a fast-forward video of the Road Below.
Singapore authorities say more than 11,000 visitors cleared two checkpoints in the first seven hours of reopening the land border. Based on CNA Journalists made trips in both directions, traffic was smooth at dawn and there were no reports of congestion from 6am to 9am. However, things could be different this weekend.
For vehicles registered in Singapore entering Malaysia, the government has stated free road (RC) one week from April 1-7. This means that the regular RM20 RC will be waived for both Touch n Go card users and cars with an RFID vehicle entry permit (VEP). Besides, no tolls for all vehicles on the Expressway and Second Link for a week from April 1.
When Travel insurance for Malaysians visiting Singapore is no longer required, foreign vehicles entering the republic must have a valid VEP, an approval email from the Land Transport Authority of Singapore and an Autopass card. Arrival pass to SG must be filled out and proof of vaccination must be provided at the checkpoints.
