For elite status seekers, the new year comes with the scariest thing — the elite status gauge resets to zero.
Elite travel status works on the principle that you qualify every year. Last year, you hoped to achieve the state — or states — that you would enjoy this year. And unless you have lifetime statusyou may need to re-qualify this year to extend your status for another year.
Luckily, some of the great loyalty programs offer status transitions as you rise above and other rewards for having a credit card or qualifying for elite status. However, these are not always posted simultaneously, so you should monitor your account to make sure everything is posted properly.
With that in mind, here are the elite transitions you should expect this month and how to know if you qualify.
Delta Air Lines’ MQM reinvestment
income plain condition Medal Qualifying Miles (MQM) or Medal Qualifying Segments (MQS) and Medal Qualifying Dollars (MQD) are required. Following is the amount of MQM, MQS and MQD you must earn in 2023 to renew your Delta status.
- Silver medal status: 25,000 MQM or 30 MQS + 3,000 MQD.
- Gold medal status: 50,000 MQM or 60 MQS + 8,000 MQD.
- Platinum medal status: 75,000 MQM or 100 MQS + 12,000 MQD.
- Diamond medal status: 125,000 MQM or 140 Medal Eligible Segments + 20,000 MQD.
Delta will roll over any MQMs you earned above your status tier last year. For example, let’s say you’re a Platinum Medalist but you finished 2022 with 105,000 MQMs. That means you will start this year with 30,000 MQMs.
Calculate convert MQMsubtract your status tier requirement from your 2022 MQM total.

PQP kicks off United Airlines 2023
Before we move into hotel status, here’s a reminder for those who are eligible to participate unity status. You will receive a Premium Eligibility Points (PQP) deposit based on your status in 2022. Here’s what you can expect:
- Premium Silver: 500 PQP.
- premium gold: 1,000 PQP.
- Premium Platinum: 1,500 PQP.
- Premier League 1K: 2,500 PQP.
The PQP deposit will help you qualify for status. Here’s what you need to earn this year to win United status:

United will also offer a PQP deposit in 2024 for the status you earn in 2023.
In our tests, United have yet to deposit PQP 2023 for its Premier member MileagePlus account.

Hilton’s rollover night
Hilton rolls over to any excess nights you earn on your status claim, starting with entry-level status. Here’s what it takes to earn hotel status This year:
- The silver: 10 nights or four stays or 25,000 basis points.
- Yellow: 40 nights or 20 stays or 75,000 basis points.
- Diamond: 60 nights or 30 stays or 120,000 basis points.
Last year, however, the status requirements were reduced. Silver requires seven nights, Gold requires 28 nights, and top level Diamond status can be obtained after 42 nights. And since Hilton goes over any night beyond your status requirement (note, only nights pass, not length of stay or base points), you can continue to qualify for achieved status in 2023 without stepping foot in a Hilton lobby this year.
For example, if you earned 38 nights last year (10 nights higher than required for Gold), you will have 10 overnights this year. Calculate rollover nightsubtract your 2022 elite night claim from your 2022 elite night count.
Also you can earn Diamond status by holding Hilton honors the American Express Aspire card.

Hyatt credit card night
Qualifying for Globalist one of prioritize my status This year. Here’s what it takes to earn Hyatt Status This year:
- explorer: 10 elite nights or 25,000 basis points ($5,000 spent on Hyatt). Or, hold one of two Hyatt credit cards.
- Explorer: 30 elite nights or 50,000 basis points ($10,000 spent on Hyatt).
- globalist: 60 elite nights or 100,000 basis points ($20,000 spent on Hyatt).
Hyatt’s World provide Hyatt World Credit Card and World of Hyatt corporate credit card.
With a World of Hyatt credit card, you automatically receive five qualifying nights per year. You’re also eligible to earn two more qualifying nighttime credits for every $5,000 you spend on the card.
The business card offers five elite nights for every $10,000 you spend on the card annually.
In the accounts we checked, Hyatt credit card nights were still not posted.

IHG rollover night
Like Hilton, IHG One Rewards roll over any qualifying nights beyond Gold, Platinum, and Diamond Elite. One notable exception is Silver Elite, so any nights earned in excess of Silver Elite (between 11 and 19 nights) will not be converted.
Rollover nights are valid for up to one calendar year. Here’s what it takes to earn IHG One Reward Status This year:
- Elite Silver: 10 nights.
- elite gold: 20 nights or 40,000 elite qualifying points.
- elite platinum: 40 nights or 60,000 elite qualifying points.
- elite diamond: 70 nights or 120,000 elite qualifying points.
Let’s say you win 62 elite-eligible nights in 2022. Since that’s 22 in excess of Platinum Elite, IHG will move on to 22 elite-eligible nights. That means you will qualify for at least Gold Elite this year.

Marriott credit card night
Finally, like with Hyatt, some Marriott Bonvoy members earn elite nights just by owning a Marriott co-branded card. Here’s what it takes to earn Marriott Bonvoy status This year:
- .Elite Silver: 10 elite nights.
- elite gold: 25 elite nights.
- elite platinum: 50 elite nights.
- Elite Titan: 75 elite nights.
- elite ambassador: 100 elite nights (plus $23,000 in annual qualifying spending).

Only 35 more nights to reach Titanium Elite status.

bottom line
While no one likes to see their elite status stats reset to zero, there are a few programs that give you a head start. So far, it appears that Marriott is the only program that has posted its credit card nights.
