Military family reunited with dog 3 years after separation

Becca Brown and her family have made some tough decisions over the past few years. Her husband works in the United States Air Force, and they have a 6-year-old triptych. Back in 2018, their lives were turned upside down when they had to go to Germany after Brown’s husband was transferred. During that time, they made the difficult decision to re-adopt their dog Piper. They hope the dog’s new life arrangement is temporary, but they know it’s unlikely.

Somehow, after years of separation, Piper found her way back to who she was. She seems very confused but is very excited to receive so much love from her family.

Piper’s Unexpected Journey

When looking for a home for Piper, Brown found a family friend in Kansas who seemed a great fit. Of course, the Browns hoped that when they returned from Germany a few years later, Piper would return home with them. However, they don’t think that’s fair to her new family.

“It doesn’t have to be temporary,” Brown said. “We didn’t want someone to stick to her and then three years later we took her away.”

So when Brown realizes that Piper and her new self are happy together, she eventually loses touch with her family. However, she was not worried, because she knew the dog was in good hands. So when the Browns returned to the United States, they accepted the fact that Piper was not going home.

But after settling into a new home in Pensacola, the Browns took an unexpected turn. Piper is no longer with her new family, and she has had a chance to return home! The whole Brown family was shocked.

The ultimate home page!

Carla Olmstead’s son found Piper on the roadside in Oklahoma. When he opened the car door, she jumped in and refused to leave. So, the family took the baby to the vet and microvascularized him. When Brown’s contact information came in, they called her immediately. She didn’t answer at first but was overjoyed when she answered the second family call.

No one knows how Piper ended up in Oklahoma, but it was almost fate. Brown was willing to pay a company to ship Piper to Florida. However, Olmstead is adamant that she wants to do it herself. She wanted to witness the reunion in this one-of-a-kind story.

Of course, the Olmsteads were heartbroken to have to say goodbye to such a sweet dog, but they were still happy to help in any way they could. Olmstead and Piper had a fun trip to Pensacola, where the pup was spoiled for burgers along the way. While the reunion is lovely, it’s not what you’d expect.

“Piper was a bit confused, she’d obviously never seen the new home, and she didn’t really miss the kids, they were only 3 years old the last time she saw them,” Brown said. “So it’s not like ‘Homeward Bound’ or anything.”

But since then, Brown has shared updates with Olmstead to let her know that Piper is adjusting well. She slept peacefully through the night and played happily with the children. It’s been a long journey to get there, but Piper is finally back where she belongs!
