Michael Conlan talks to Santa Cruz-Wood, handling the first loss

The WBA may have ordered them to fight, but Michael Conlan doesn’t believe Leo Santa Cruz and Leigh Wood will go head to head.

Last month, the governing body ordered their two featherweight champions to meet as part of their goal of having one for each division.

Conlan spoke to Boxing Social’s Ayman Khan recently and explained why he thinks that’s not going to happen. “I think there are more big fights out there for him than Leigh, at the upper weight. Why does he want to fight him? I really doubt that.”

If the fight broke out, who would Conlan choose to win?

“I will return to Leo. For 11 and a half rounds, I took Leigh to school. I rate him as resilient and tough but in terms of boxing, I think Leo is a better boxer.”

In March, Wood staged a thrilling comeback to knock out Conlan in round 12 after an electric night in Nottingham. Conlan talks about dealing with his first professional failure.

“It’s hard to get over a loss,” Conlan said. “The first time I was knocked down. I’m fine, I got over it already. I’ve been down for a while, but I understand the mistakes I’ve made and what I need to do to fix them. I am looking forward to the next steps.”

Conlan returned to the ring in Belfast on August 6.
