MG 4 EV, which we show you from BIMS 2023 a few months ago, now on sale in Indonesia. While the electric hatchback starts at RM111 thousand in Thailand, the lower version of the two variants in Indonesia starts from RM200 thousand. Specifically, the MG 4 Ignite is being sold for Rp 649.9 juta (RM200,974). The price of the most advanced Magnify I-Smart has yet to be revealed by MG Motor Indonesia.

As with Thailand, MG 4 in Indonesia is equipped with a 170 hp/250 Nm electric motor powered by a 51 kWh battery pack with MG’s liquid cooling system. There are five driving modes – Eco, Normal, Sport, Custom, Snow – and four levels of energy regeneration, which MG calls KERS. Range per full charge is 425 km in the NEDC cycle, which translates to less than 400 km in the more realistic WLTP.

For charging, the MG 4 uses AC power up to 6.6 kW and DC fast charging up to 88 kW; with the latter, going from 10% to 80% SOC takes 35 minutes. Leaving the car to charge overnight with the wall box takes about 8 hours and 30 minutes.

The MG 4 Electric is 4,287 mm long and 1,836 mm wide, 58 mm shorter but 88 mm wider than the Honda City Hatchback. Typical of a space-saving electric vehicle without a bulky engine, the MG’s wheelbase (2,705 mm) is relatively long for its area.

In metal, the MG 4 is distinctive and certainly stands out from the crowd of ICE hatchbacks. With its sharp eyes and lack of a front grille, it also sets itself apart from the rest of the MG line, which usually has a Mazda-style mask.

The rear end is more dramatic. The discrete border increases to the full-width and wrap-around taillights. It is part of the rear spoiler that protrudes so much that it could have been a makeshift bar table. Illuminated patterned flat surface consisting of random red lines.

The dashboard of the MG 4 has a very clean and minimalist design, featuring a full-width vent strip and a square steering wheel. Of course, there’s a large central screen, but what’s unique here is the 10.25-inch horizontal touchscreen that has a row of physical buttons underneath. Another interesting thing is the “headboard” that holds the gear selector.

The base Indonesia Ignite specs don’t have Magnify’s 360-degree camera, fancy rear spoiler, LED detailing on the taillights, and glossy black window trim. Inside, the entry-spec EV has no wireless charging, and the theme is all-black (versus two-tone). Elsewhere, the Ignite falls far short of Magnify’s namesake I-Smart telematics system as well as some ADAS features like blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert with brakes. However, AEB, LDW and ACC are all present.

In Thailand, there are two variants of the MG 4, D for 869,000 baht (RM115,806) and X for 969,000 baht (RM129,133). Looks like we’re missing out on quite a bit of good EV value (based on Thai prices, not Indonesian) without SAIC’s MG in our market – what do you think and the MG 4? interesting?
