Kia Optima Hybrid 2017-2018, Hyundai Sonata Hybrid 2017 recalled due to engine problems

A recall of the 2017-2018 Kia Optima Hybrid and 2017 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid sedans is underway to address an issue with the gasoline engines of the affected vehicles.

Both models share the same underlying platform and powertrain, the cause of the recall. According to documents from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), affected vehicles may have connecting bearings that are prone to failure. In the worst case, this can cause the connecting rod to break, puncture the engine block, destroy the engine and cause a fire hazard.

Hyundai’s recall covers 13,247 Sonata hybrids, while Kia’s includes 10,731 Optima hybrids, for a total of 23,978 US vehicles from both brands combined.

Plug-in hybrid versions of the Sonata Hybrid and Optima Hybrid were also sold during the affected model years. Kia, a brand owned by Hyundai, has made it clear that the Optima Plug-In Hybrid is included in the recall. Hyundai did not make a similar statement, but its recall appears to include the Sonata Plug-In Hybrid.

All versions have the 4-liter direct injection “Nu” petrol engine, manufactured in Ulsan, Korea. The same recall also affected the Hyundai Tucson, which was not offered as a hybrid at the time but featured the same engine.

The recall population was determined by reviewing production records, according to recall documents. The documents say Hyundai and Kia are not aware of a specific design or manufacturing defect and are conducting the recall as a precautionary measure.

Owners of affected vehicles will be contacted by Hyundai and Kia with instructions to bring the vehicle to a dealer. Hyundai plans to start notifying owners by mail on November 12, while Kia will continue on November 29.

The motors will be inspected and replaced free of charge if necessary. Dealers will also install Knock Sensor Detection System software to prevent damage from excessive connecting rod bearing wear. Kia will also extend the powertrain warranty from 10 years/100,000 miles to 15 years/150,000 miles.

The affected models represent previous generations of the Sonata and Optima. Plug-in hybrid version of Sonata leaving in 2020, is instead a push towards plug-in hybrid SUVs. And Kia discontinued all hybrid Optimas when the model was redesigned and renamed the K5.

The engine problem is a small-scale problem compared to one earlier this year that Hyundai had planned Full battery pack replacement for 82,000 EVs.

Hyundai reported stop developing gasoline powertrain as it shifts towards EV. Kia in 2020 announced a $25 billion investment aimed at achieving its own EV shift, confirms 11 new electric models to 2025.
