McCruelty to McPlant: A History of PETA and McDonald’s

After decades of PETA campaigns, McDonald’s has finally started testing a vegan burger in the US! Pressure from PETA and our supporters and the changing vegan landscape in the fast food industry — which PETA paved the way — led the company to finally listen to consumer demands. about vegetarian options.

The first check out McPlant burgers in the US starting November 2021 at eight locations, where it sold three times more than analysts expected. Because it’s doing so well, the chain is expanding to more than 600 locations in the San Francisco Bay and the Dallas-Fort Worth area starting February 14.

We look forward to seeing more from McDonald’s in the future, including the permanent expansion of the McPlant burger to all locations and a fully vegan burger with eggless mayonnaise and nondairy cheese. In honor of this win, here’s a quick recap of PETA’s McDonald’s campaigns:

1997: Monitor “McLibel’s Judgment,” PETA wrote to McDonald’s asking the company to take steps to reduce the suffering of slaughtered animals for its restaurants.

October 1999: PETA kicks off campaign McCruelty after two years of failed negotiations with McDonald’s.

September 2000: After 11 months of campaigning and more than 400 protests against McDonald’s, PETA is suspending its campaign after the company agreed to make some positive changes to pets — marking the first time in its history. In American history, a major butcher agreed to bare minimum improvements to domestic animal welfare.

September 2000 to February 2009: PETA tried to work with McDonald’s to modernize the company’s animal welfare standards and make further improvements, especially regarding the way chickens are slaughtered in the US, but they refused.

February 2009: PETA lifted its ban on McDonald’s after the company failed to require its US and Canadian chicken suppliers to adopt less cruel slaughter methods.

October 2017: After a 20-year campaign, McDonald’s belatedly agreed implements less cruel slaughter methods by 2024 for a fraction of the birds it kills.

November 2021: The successful grand opening chain first tested McPlant burgers at eight locations in California and Texas.

February 2022: McDonald’s expands McPlant burger test to more than 600 locations in the San Francisco Bay and Dallas-Fort Worth area.
