Mazda is now beginning its journey to electrification and SUV deployment, while remaining open to alternative fuels. A new sports car could also be coming?
While Mazda sells MX-5 like its a bread and butter sports car, a car with a rotating halo is rumored to have been in the works for a while.
Don’t abbreviate Mazda. The brand may finally have a foray into a new sports car to join the MX-5 in its lineup.
Talk to the media at CX-60 revealed in Portugal, Mazda Europe design director Jo Stenuit was very interested in the idea of another sports car to compete with the MX-5.
“It would be great, wouldn’t it? Sure, everyone wants one,” said Mr. Stenuit.
When asked what it would look like and whether it (or the MX-5) would be an electric vehicle, Mr. Stenuit wasn’t surprised to say that any electric Mazda sports car would need must be a work of art.
“It will be beautiful, but most importantly it will drive very well. I think it will drive better than the current MX-5. I can imagine myself driving through the woods with an electric car [sports car] and it will be very good. ”
This follows from Mazda registers trademark ‘R’shows it’s working on a sports sub-brand.
The R name will be a departure from the standard for Mazda, which has previously used the MPS, RX and MazdaSpeed badges for its performance cars.
However, the company recently used the R360 coupe in a series of images to celebrate its 100th anniversary. Does Mazda prepare an homage?
We’ve been teased, teased, and teased again about Mazda’s potential return to rotary performance cars, most recently with the RX-Vision and its GT3 versionthe latter is one Gran Turismo especially.
We also know Mazda is preparing a range of cars built on a rear-wheel drive architecture, with power from an electrified inline six, so it could well become a performance sub-brand on par with the BMW M, Mercedes-AMG and Audi RS.
Mazda has equipped a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine from CX-9 and CX-5 less 3 sedans and hatchbacksbut those cars (still out of the table for Australia) don’t have special performance badges.
The last performance Mazda made it Down Under was 3 MPS, sold until 2013 as a rival of Volkswagen Golf GTI.
Either way, we’re excited about the potential for a new Mazda sports car, whether it’s electric or rotary.
