For me, there are three dog holidays in May: National Mother’s Dog Day (for obvious reasons), International Chihuahua Appreciation Day (see Chiweenie, my Lucy, pictured!) and National Rescue Dog Day. Although both of my girls, Emmy and Lucy, are now comfortably lounging around my house in their oversized beds, they were once homeless. During the height of the Covid pandemic, Emmy was abandoned at a school about an hour’s drive from my house. One of the teachers (my friend’s aunt) noticed a shaggy, white dog around the campus for the whole hour. She kindly took the dog to the vet, confirmed to the small community that no dog parent was responsible, and through social media efforts, Emmy reached our family. . She loves to “talk” to us (her picture) and is a delighted and a mischievous 3-year-old puppy. Rescue isn’t an option for everyone, but if you have the opportunity to care for a homeless dog, it’s an incredibly rewarding experience.

Competing in dog competitions isn’t as scary as it looks; It’s a fun way to bond with your dog. During May 2023: The The American College of Veterinary Medicine (ACVO) National Service Animal Eye Examination Event. The 14th annual event takes place in 200 cities in the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico and Hong Kong for free May eye exams for service and working animals.
May 2 – 3, 2023: Amazon Pet Day. In 48 hours, shop thousands of pet products and supplies on Amazon.com. In addition to the deals, Amazon Pets is donating more than $100,000 to several local nonprofits that support animal welfare. For more information, read this Amazon Pet Day 2023 FAQ.
May 5-7, 2023: Paws Chicago Spring Adoption-A-Thon. The 11th annual adoption contest features a variety of pets, including several litters of kittens, dogs rescued from hurricanes, and gentle older pets. Adoption by appointment; Pedestrians are welcome but subject to appointment availability. Held at the PAWS Chicago Lincoln Park Adoption Center. May 6, 2023: Coffee for Canines. Donate Watson’s Wish Foundation, a non-profit organization that helps fund surgeries for dogs, while socializing and sipping coffee. The event will take place at the Third Wind Café at Sunbury Station, 100 North 3rd Street in Sunbury, PA. The fun includes special drinks, a fundraising raffle and a photographer taking pictures of the dogs and their humans.
May 6, 2023: Helen Woodward Animal Center’s 9th Annual Puppy Prom. This prom-themed reunion has brought together formerly orphaned pets and their families from the “graduation classes” since 2004. Once again, the event returns to welcome the pups. she appeared in interesting dresses, tuxedos, brooches, and painted toenails. Free prom themed party for all Helen Woodward Animal Center alumni and other rescue assist guests. Small and larger dogs can participate in time-honored activities like crowning the “King and Queen of Prom” Best Dressed ($15 each – ENTER HERE! ) Hosted by Original 40 Brewing Company – 3117 University Ave, San Diego, CA.
May 6, 2023: The 8th Annual Masters Obedience Championship at Westminster. Check the dog handler’s ability to comply with the requirements. Purebred and mixed dogs compete. Held at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Queens, NY. Visit Westminster.kennelclub.org for more information.
May 6, 2023: Master Agility Championship at Westminster. Presented by Purina Pro Plan. Timed competition test to test a dog’s ability to cross obstacles on cues from the handler. May 8-9, 2023: The 147th Annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. Presented by Pro Plan.
