Matthew Gonzalez hopes to have ‘Gunz’ shine on June 29

Posted on June 28, 2023

Matthew Gonzalez Haven’t fought in a while, but he’s going to change all that. And he’d better fight like hell on June 29 at Sony Hall, because he’s highly capable. Terell Bostic in front of him in an eight-round feature presented by Larry Goldberg And Boxing Insider Promotion.

The 27-year-old hails from Ridgewood in Queens and has shown an aptitude for boxing since an early age. In an amateur career that spanned 64 games, Gonzalez won five national youth titles.

But he took a break from boxing for a while before moving on and embarking on a professional career.

His debut came in May 2017 when he knocked out Raekwon Speight in the first round. He often finds himself fighting opponents with more experience. But those challenges did not discourage him.

It’s been a long time since Gonzalez actually fought. In his last game, he drew six rounds with tough Dakota Linger in October 2021. Interestingly, in the next game, Linger knocked out rival Josue Vargas in two innings.

Gonzalez first encountered current coach and manager Joe Zagarino during Teofimo Lopez’s training camp. Zagarino, a former amateur boxer, has a number of boxers in the camp, and fights with him a bit.

“We had a chemical reaction,” said Zagarino. That is instant.

He loves the boxer’s skill set and competitive nature.

“He was a violent artist,” Zagarino said of Gonzalez. “He creates chances and controls the pace. he constantly imposes himself on his opponents, and he is liberal, flexible and creative… and mentally, he has the edge.”

Zagarino says that Gonzalez’s balance and footwork have gotten better since he’s worked with him and that he’s doing analyzes to give his boxer an edge.

A southerner, Gonzalez adopted the nickname “Gunz’s left hand,” and with “terrible hand speed,” as Zagarino puts it, he could make that nickname.

He definitely wants things fast; At Westbury Boxing Club, where he trains, he usually likes fights that come from talented amateurs, because with only three innings in the matches, they tend to operate at speed. much more stable than the professional ones.

He can see that kind of speed being very beneficial against Bostic, along with what Zagarino calls a “brutal” backhand that has given many enemies a break. Gonzalez is 12-0-1 with eight KOs and has a lot of attitude. He has a relatively large following that he brings to Sony Hall.

And there’s a chance he’ll come back after this. Zagarino explained that for all of New York City’s metropolitan area, Larry Goldberg and Boxing Insider are now “a big deal” because of the consistency of their performances in the biggest market. domestic.

And it’s true.
