Maryland horse breeder, Veterinarian Fred Lewis dies aged 95


Maryland horse breeder and veterinarian, Dr. Fred Lewis died on March 13.

Lewis and his wife, Mary Agnes, to whom he was married for 80 years until her death in 2020, bred and raced horses off their ranch in Clarksville, Md. from 2003 to 2022.

The Lewises’ top earner, Katie’s Love, was the piece they actually bought during the 2003 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Eastern Falllingling Sale. Purchased for $60,000 from Bill Reightler consignment, Katie’s Love, a hybrid Maryland daughter of Not For Love, won the 2007 Shine Again Stakes award at Pimlico racetrack and got the bank close to $250,000.

Katie’s Love’s daughter, Celtic Katie (Posse), bred by Lewises, also became a stake winner, acquiring a Geisha Stock in 2014 in Pimlico.

The Lewises also bred and raced against the Scipion gelding Who Stole My Sock, who won the Maryland Million Starter Handicap in 2016.

A World War II veteran, Lewis is survived by his 10 children, 17 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren.
