Many killed in shootings in Copenhagen shopping center when 22-year-old suspect was arrested | World News
Danish police say several people have been killed in a shooting at a shopping mall in Copenhagen.
“One person has been arrested in connection with the shooting,” Copenhagen police announced, describing the assailant as a 22-year-old man of Danish ethnicity.
Chief Inspector Soeren Thomassen said the force did not rule out the possibility that the incident at the Field shopping mall, one of the largest in Scandinavia, was linked to terrorism.
Police said they continued to be at the scene in large numbers. They declined to comment on the nature of the weapons used.
“We’re still massively present at Field and working to secure the entire building. If you’re still at Field’s, stay where you are and wait for the police,” they said.
“Citizens are encouraged not to contact police with non-emergency requests unless the requests are related to the Field shooting.”
Local media said three people were taken to a trauma center at one of Copenhagen’s main hospitals.
According to Chief Inspector Thomassen, police first received a report at 5:30 p.m. about the shooting.
He said there was no evidence that the perpetrator was conspiring with others.
Reuters photos showed people running from the mall, including families with young children.
Another scene shows armed police standing by an ambulance on the street outside.
Copenhagen Mayor Sophie Andersen tweeted: “Horrible reports of the Fields shooting. We don’t know for sure yet how many people were injured or dead, but it’s very serious.
She added: “Urgent preparation for Copenhagen has been called for, we understand in reference to the city’s crisis response plan.
The number of people killed and injured has yet to be officially announced.
Photos shared by local media organizations show heavily armed police at the scene and at least ten ambulances.
British singer Harry Styles is scheduled to perform at 7pm UK time tonight at a venue near a shopping centre.
In a Snapchat message, he wrote: “Me and my team pray for everyone involved in the Copenhagen shopping mall shooting. I’m in shock.”
Initially, concert promoter Live Nation said the concert would still take place at 8pm.
However, fans who commented on the promoter’s Facebook page at 8:25 a.m. complained that many were unable to enter the stadium, where the concert had yet to begin.
Finally, they were informed at 8:45pm last night by someone on stage that the concert would be cancelled, apparently at the direction of the police, who are currently escorting fans from the arena. .
The Danish royal family announced that they have canceled a dinner that had been planned to celebrate the opening leg of the Tour de France in Denmark.
