Even cameras with the best metering systems can only work to produce technically correct exposures; they don’t know how you want to specifically combine shutter speed, aperture and ISO to get the desired creative effect. That said, you don’t always have to use manual mode; semi-automatic modes are usually a good (or even better) option in certain situations. However, it pays to be comfortable with manual mode.
