The victim, whose name has not been released by police, was shot in the chest at about 11:40 a.m. while riding a northbound Q train that was pulling into Canal Street station, according to the Department of Police. Officials did not provide information about the events leading up to the shooting.
The Fire Department said two people were taken to Bellevue Hospital, but did not provide information on their condition.
About an hour after the shooting, the assailant ran off into the street and was not caught, police said.
The shooting happened less than six weeks after a gunman shot 10 people on the R train in Brooklyndozens of others were injured as a result of the terrorist attack.
The violence made people think the subway was unsafe as the city recovered from the coronavirus pandemic.
Social media users described seeing shots fired and people running from the train after the late morning shooting.
The shooting prompted transit officials to reroute N and Q trains while police investigated the shooting. Officials warned riders could experience delays on the E, N, Q and R lines in both directions as trains run on the same local lines.
