Many people love to hug their dogs, but what if your dog could hug you back? Brian Hanshaft taught his Alaskan Malamute puppy to “hug” at an early age. The first few training videos are adorable and heartwarming, but the trick doesn’t end up as he expected.
Now that Hugo the Malamute is an adult, he still embraces his own self. He is also very enthusiastic about giving hugs. The only problem? His hugs tend to be “aggressive” and more like collisions than hugs. But Hanshaft accepts his dog’s odd behaviors.
Hugo Learn to hug
Hugo has a large following on social media because Hanshaft posts a lot of adorable training videos. The puppy’s initial posts showed all the impressive tricks he learned as a puppy, such as “high five”, “stand up” and of course “hug”. .
When Hugo first learns to hug, he will stand up on his hind legs and place his puppy’s paws on his human chest. But now that Hugo is at full size, his hugging method has changed dramatically. To showcase the transformation, Hanshaft posted a video with the caption, “teaching my puppy to hug and think nothing can go wrong…”
The video begins with Hugo’s innocent puppy hugs, but as it transitions to adult “hugs” it shows Malamute confronting her human on several occasions. Whenever Hanshaft bent down, Hugo would hug him the way he hugged him. It’s not quite as wholesome as before, but it’s hilarious!
Now, Hanshaft posts fewer training videos and more funny videos. Most of the videos include a punch line in which Hugo handles his human at the end.
A Lifetime of “Positive Hugs”
Hugo’s hugs made him famous online. A lot of people fell in love with the way he lunged at them trying to hug him. The hug trick isn’t the only one that leads to this silly behavior, however. Teaching Hugo to stand, be five feet tall, and lie on his back also contributes to these unique hugs. But Hanshaft wouldn’t do it any other way.
Hanshaft revealed that he wasn’t the only one Hugo stopped. If other people crouch near the puppy, he can give them an aggressive hug too! Although most videos include Hugo handling someone, Hanshaft has shown that there are days when the puppy refuses to hug. It depends on how he feels that day.

If you want to teach your adorable pup to hug you, be aware that he may not be as stable as they grow older. However, many fans will argue that Hugo’s aggressive hugs are even better than his gentle hugs as a puppy.
