1st grade winner and 2nd year male Lukes . Alley and rank 2 veteran sir Hello Broadway will be moved to Virginia for the 2023 breeding season, according to stallion co-owner Michael Ingrassia.
The stallions will stand at Wind N’ Springs Farm near Berryville, Va., a nearly 120-acre ranch with a six-hair line of grass. Their tuition fees will be announced later this year. Christine Reed is managing the farm.
“With the acquisition of Churchill Colony DownsI think things are going to explode in Virginia,” Ingrassia, who also stands Great Lord with Brian Thomas at the Flowing Acres Farm near Charles Town, W. Va. “I believe these two stallions will stand their ground in this state and the big money will start to filter through the breeders’ program.”
In February, Churchill Downs Inc. announced the acquisition of Peninsula Pacific Entertainment, the parent company of Colonial Downs, for $2.485 billion. CDI also purchased the rights to build The Rose, a $400 million hotel and gaming establishment in Prince William County, which will feature 175,000 square feet of gaming space and eight restaurants. The Rose is slated to open in 2023. In addition to the facilities acquired, CDI could also develop up to five historic horse racing venues in Virginia with a fleet of up to 2,300 machines.
Colonial Downs, near New Kent, was reopened after a six-year hiatus in 2019 due to the Virginia General Assembly allowing historic equestrian games in the pari-mutuel betting expansion. The track has dirt and grass surfaces but has created a niche for high-level grass races, including the New Kent County Virginia Derby (G3T) and Woodford Reserve Virginia Oaks.
Lukes Alley, 12-year-old son of Flower Lane , won the Turf Gulfstream Park (G1T) handicap and placed second in the Ft. Lauderdale Staking (G2T) in 2016. He also won two shares classified at Honeysuckle at 4 for the late owner/breeder Eugene Melnyk.
While Lukes Alley’s first ponies arrived this year, the family was active on the track and in the sales ring. His half-sister Sea of Africa (War front ) sold for $1.2 million at the 2021 Sale at Keeneland September, where Seahorse Stables purchased her from Gainesway’s shipment. She worked regularly at Belmont Park since May 23. Half sister Cute (Empire Maker) won her third warm-up at 3 1/4 lengths on July 9 at Indianapolis horseshoe for Gainesway owner/raider and trainer Bill Mott.
Lukes Alley is also a half brother to Arrifana (Curlin ), who won Nellie Morse Stakes and finished second in Comely Stakes (G3). She retired in 2020 and was sold by Gainesway for $300,000 at Fasig-Tipton’s The November Sale to agents Alex Solis II and Jason Litt. The mare produced a foal this year by leading the Into Mischief stallion for co-breeders LNJ Foxwoods and Gainesway.
